So here it goes... I've been doing wedding photography for quite a while now BUT no ABN and tax stuff like that. My friends' been telling me to apply for an ABN. so whats the deal? any Pros or cons? and advise? and if i would to apply for one how do i get one? can i get one as an "individual"? do i need to pay anything?

cheers,
budj

Since no-one else has replied I will... call the tax department and ask them. I found the tax department here quite helpful.

It costs nothing to get an ABN number...you can do it all online. If you want to supply albums in the future having an ABN certainly helps registering with a lot of wholesale businesses. You would be classed as a Sole Trader...(Individual.)

Lots of wholesalers do not sell to the public and want proof that you are a business before they will give you pricelists etc.

If you do not expect to make $50,000 or over you also do not have to worry about the GST.

My advice would be to create a contract for your clients ( plenty of info on here) and to take out Public Liability Insurance. ( Also plenty of info on here).
GOOGLE obtaining an ABN and go to the site ....there will be a wealth of information to help you.

Good Luck

Sadly the ABN does not share the IRD's views on customer service.
