Well, I had installed the hacked firmware and was very confused by people saying that it allowed mirror lockup, oneshot AF, and ISO 3200. Turns out it was an older version of the hacked firmware. If you are having these same issues I strongly suggest doing a search for the latest version (file name E3kr111b71.rar). I am absolutely thrilled now that these features are enabled.

In particular, I think almost all the "focus problems" people have experienced with the Digital Rebel have to do with its default AI AF. So many times when I would try and focus and recompose, the AI Servo would kick in because the camera detected motion. This happened most when focusing and then tilting the camera down. With the Oneshot AF, all my focusing problems are resolved.

Just thought I'd give people a heads up.

AI servo doesn't work with the hacked firmware, and focus/recompose in AI servo won't work well on any camera. Look into CF4-1 if you need that - but the rebel doesn't support that either.

I know that AI servo is non-selectable, but what I wanted out of the firmware was One-Shot AF, so that I could focus and recompose without the AI Servo kicking in some of the time. I assure you it works in this manner. It is selectable on the left direction key instead of from the CF menu.

AI Servo DOES work with the hacked firmware - just like it does with the original firmware. You just cannot select it and have it work in other modes (Sports) like the hacked firmware was trying to enable. Let's be clear - the AI Servo DOES work with the 300D hacked firmware.........it works as Canon intended it to work on the 300D - in Sports mode and when it senses movement if 'one shot' is not selected. I don't want people thinking that AI Servo is a thing of the past with the hacked firmware - I just used it tonight on mine for example....

good point..you can still use it as it was intended, but you also have the option of disabling it by turning on one-shot.

Sorry about my ignorance on this. How do you find where to download it? How do you get the download on to your camera and then learn how to use the improvements?

There's a newer firmware, which I haven't tried. It supposedly allows AF Servo in all modes, but you have to use a combination of buttons to activate it.

Are still there 300D owners with the original firmware?
I've "upgraded" mine right after the camera came in my hands. Big difference - nothing to compare with the original firmware.

boone - that 'newer' firmware you are speaking of is probably the "undutchables" version - and it still does not allow for the proper implementation of AI Servo in other modes. None of the firmware 'upgrades' have successfully done that to date to my knowledge.

ecobo - I agree with you - if you are still using the Canon firmware you are really missing out on some VERY useful added functionality. To me - the firmware would be worth spending money on just for Flash Exposure Compensation - and you get that any many other things for FREE. The firmware hack is one of the better things you can add to a Rebel.

like BOONE says "you have to use a combination of buttons to activate it", which means pressing LEFT and shutter button at the same time: not so difficult, but it has to be AT THE SAME TIME, because pressing the LEFT puts the camera on manual focus and therefore u loose the autofocus prediction; but if u can press left and shutter button at the same time, u should be able to take the corerct picture. I'm still using my original firmware..

How noisy is ISO 3200? I find 1600 very annoying to use due to the noise and them amount of time spent in post processing just for noise reduction.

Do you actually use mirror lockup? I've never had any issues with mirror slap on long exposures.

What's all this talk about focus/recompose? I focus like normal, then switch to MF to recompose so my focus doesn't change.

I have been thinking about getting hacked for mine. I am nervous that is will mess the camera up. How hard is it to go back to original.

You don't need to go back to the original firmware. You will love the hack, believe me.

I too am afraid of the hack. Thing is, now that I learned the sports mode has the option I was looking for their is no need for me to add the hack. When the time comes for me to get more advanced funtions (because I outgrow the existing options), I will buy a new body. In the meantime, I continue to learn the existing options I have and how to shoot great pictures. If you have the hack and it works for you, great. I am just of the opinion, unless Canon supports it, I do not use it. (Yes, even lenses)

I did the Undutchables hack in order to shoot RAW in all modes and it is great.:)

Before I got my 350D, I had a 300D. The camera is a great camera as far as I'm concerned. But it wasn't long before I wanted mirror lockup, raw-jpeg (yes, minus). So after 4 days of ownership, I ungraded to pre-undutchables. Wehah. It worked get for the rest of the time I had it. I don't know about the undutchables, but If others are happy then go for it. I tested that I could go back so I felt fine. Also someone.

I've had our 300D since February and still use the Canon firmware. Coming from the film world it is easy and fast and does things I could never think of doing with my old T70. And besides, I haven't figured out all the functions/settings available on the 300D with the Canon manual. A hack would be confusing to the max.
