Mediatemple.net (http://mediatemple.net). Great customer service and pretty good pricing. I've got about 6-7 sites hosted with them under one account.

Most hosting companies have a plan that lets you host multiple sites in a single hosting account. I have two hosting accounts at $6/month each, since I need different server configs.

I help work with people and their web presence, so I have over 100 domains setup with various accounts.

I've gone with godaddy.com; cheapest and very reputable, I hear. Only 10 bucks a year for a standard account

This Surpass company looks pretty good. I just want a company that allows me enough space to host all my pictures for clients, offers me the ability to use e-commerce in case I ever figure out how to set something like that up and I would like to be able to create log in accounts for clients as well which with my current company requires me to pay twice a much a month and get a different type of account

surpass is quality. I have been with them on and off for about 2 years. I went to godaddy for a while to try them out and after 3 months left because I just did not like the control panel at all.

Surpass though is nice. Very cheap, lots of bandwidth and space, good CS and good response times to your website when you click to view it.

On the cheap: QualityHostOnline.com, DayanaHost.com

Not so cheap: 2mHost.com, ServersandDomains.com

I registered my domain w/ godaddy and currently using Snappages.com to host and create my site. Its a new company but they look to have some great things when they get rolling.

You can visit my site from the link below.

I host with bluehost.com (http://www.bluehost.com/track/cdi/potn) (not to be confused with bludomain!).

My website is built on oscommerce (http://www.oscommerce.com). It's open source but requires some know-how to install and customize for proofing purposes.

I wouldn't touch 1and1 or Godaddy with a ten-foot pole, especially 1and1.

Both are very large, cheap and pretty reliable, however they have non-existent customer support (people in India called Bob, reading off a script and telling you that a ticket has been created and it is being escalated to an admin, is not customer support).

I use and recommend to clients (I do websites for a living and have been for over 10 years): LiquidWeb, RackSpace (expensive but you get what you pay for), LunarPages, A Small Orange, and Media Temple... in that order.

Web hosting is an awful commodity experience - basically it works like this:

1) Find a good, small company (but not too small) that has their own NOC and is sitting on the backbone. You want a company that you can not only get to a live person, but one that is physically in the same location as your actual server.

2) Ride that company until they get bought by the likes of 1and1.com or Web.com (which is inevitable btw)

3) Once they get bought, start your search for another company referenced in point #1.

I don't know if you've ever used GoDaddy, but their customer support is excellent, and is not in India. I have no idea about 1and1, but lumping GoDaddy in with "poor customer support" is not something I've experienced, or even heard, outside of a one-off here and there.

My church's website uses them. I didn't chose them and if I had my choice I would use a different host. I do our church's website and I've had several times that I could not connect for some reason or another.

Softlayer. I've got a dedicated twin quad core Xeon machine with 4 gigs of RAM and 500GB of mirrored HDD space + a 250 GB main drive. ;)

Granted, it's a bit more than what most people would pay for a server clocking in at $367 a month, and that's before the hardware additions I'm making soon... But I actually use all of that horsepower. It does a lot more than just a photography site.

I use Hostmds . Even though I paid for 2 years in advance, I'm looking for another host.

The company promises a 100% money back guarantee, but they don't honor it when you request it. The site is constantly down for hours, sometimes days. Don't waste your money or time on Hostmds.

Do most people design their own website? I'm considering a new site, but a very simple one. I think I have access to Adobe Dreamweaver, but I've never even looked at it!

I designed my own using Microsoft Expression Web. Its pretty easy to get the hang of with tutorials and I think I did a pretty good job with it considering I had never touched web design in my life before building my own and Ive now added a karate site to my web design portfolio lol

I use swishmax 2 for my flash technologies like on my front page

I did mine all on my own, using Dreamweaver CS4. All I've done is just play with it, I designed our business website at first using Microsoft FrontPage 3 years ago. Then just tinkering with stuff since then.

I also use SlideShowPro for Lightroom for all my slide shows/galleries on there. Very easy.

I've used the following tools:

Topstyle Pro (mainly for the CSS editor which is better than Dreamweaver)
Dreamweaver
Aptana Studio
Notepad.

Then a whole host of other applications depending on what graphics/output is needed.

One thing I do use is SlideShow Pro, a great app for galleries especially if you tie it into Director.

+1! Slideshow Pro is awesome but I stopped using it because it's flash based and don't like flash anymore, though it is probably the best and most customizable gallery out there.

It's only $30 too!

I develop my own using Dreamweaver. A skill worth acquiring and not at all difficult, especially if you like to keep things simple. But I confess I'm still living in the age of frames and tables.

Dreamhost.com never had a single issue with them, servers are always up no downtime, unlimited space and bandwidth, connections are never slow. Control panel is easy to navigate and configure.

I did it the other way around. Instead of plugging the shopping cart into my website, oscommerce is my website. :)

My mobile website (www.cdifoto.mobi), however, is simple html. That's the easiest way, and IMHO the best way, to ensure full compatibility with all smart phones.

I use Jumpline.com Anytime I've ever had a question about something they are always prompt getting back to my support e-mails AND if I'm impatient I can call and someone will always be there to speak to me during business hours. And I'm talking about qualified English speaking representatives sitting on American soil. I've been with them for years and have never had even one issue with their products or service. Granted they are not the cheapest out there but trust me you don't want cheap. When I first started my website I used Globat.com because they were cheap and gave me lots of space/bandwith. What a horrible mistake. Don't use them or any webhost that offers cheap stuff. You will pull your hair out.

Do none of you use flash sites or non-flash template sites?

I know that POTN is comprised of mostly men, and men go about things a whole different way than women, but I'm shocked to see no mention of template sites.

Have a read of my FAQ and you'll see why. Essentially templates are like clones, no difference and you need to differentiate yourself from the competition.

I signed up with Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting (http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting/) 4 years ago and have never had a problem. The reason I signed with them is the ability to use PHP and mySQL so I could code my own shopping cart and customer information database. They offer unlimited storage, unlimited data transfers, 24 hour support and a 30-day guarantee.

I'm on godaddy.com, for my new site called "www.secondhandcamera.co.uk (http://www.secondhandcamera.co.uk)" but unless they speed things up a bit I will be moving to a different host (they are looking into it at the moment!).

[7/1/2010] I'm about to quit godaddy.com as they don't appear to be able to offer a fast dotnetnuke hosting experience. This shows, you get what you pay for!

I am actually trying to find a new theme for the main page, but with all of those, i spend about $2 a month. They only charge for what you use and the price has gone up since i started using it 2+ years ago.

Go Daddy for two sites. Been using them for years. Caught one of my sites down once, for 10 minutes or so. $44 a year for 5Gb. Been using them for 5 years or so. I don't need to call support, cause nothing ever goes wrong. When I have called for help installing something of my own, it was a guy in Phoenix.
