Not as easy to answer as you might think.

It depends on how much money you have available to make the 20D usable. It also depends on what you want to use the camera for. All things being equal, though, it's really a no-brainer. Go for the 20D.

Depends on what you're going to use it for. If you value simplicity and just take snapshots, go for a simpler point and shoot. If you're going to delve into serious photography, and have money, get both the G6 and 20d. If you could only choose one, have the money, and are looking to go into photography as a serious hobby, get the 20d. As a dSLR, it offers much more flexibility due to its interchangeable lenses and other accessories. This isn't to say that the G6 is a much inferior camera - it is quite capable, and at its price point it is an intelligent purchase. And since the G6 has most of the creative modes of the 20d (Av, Tv, Manual mode, etc) it is a good choice for those wanting to learn about photography on a budget.

Ok maybe I was not clear, It's not about the money it's not quality or accessory. It's a question aimed at witch camera you could always have with you to take a shot of something, just because you were there. Now the digital SLR's are larger might be a hindrance to be carrying some of the time.

Key words here are; If you had the money. This means to me that money is not the determining factor, therefore I went for the highest option. I'm sure that were it on the option list, a 1D MK II would have gotten all the votes. ;)

I used SLR (Rebel) for the past 15 years and frankly I got sick of caring a big bulky thing with me (bag with all the stuff in it). I am not a pro, I just enjoy taking pictures as serious amature.

There were two main reasons that I went with G6: compact size and hot shoe on top.

Would I buy 20D? No. I used Nikon D70 for a little while and later decided against it for the reasons mentioned above.

I second Mr Twister. I also had an SLR for a long time and most of that time the 50mm lens went with me and the rest stayed at home. G6 is the business. You get to concentrate on taking pictures and not worrying about all sorts of random bits of gear (which don't make your pictures any better at the end of the day).

Once you get used to a SLR its no different than a point and shoot. It's like learning how to drive a manual car, once you get the hang of it its very easy.

I personally dont like the 20D, It's gonna sound dumb but I dont like where the dial is. Not very convenient for me. It's just easier on the right side.

When I got my 20D after 2 years of loving use of my G2, I definitely swore not to let go of my beloved G2, as it will be my 'carry-on' camera.

Now I have a Tamrac velocity 7 shoulder bag that is big enough to take the 20D with Tamron 28-75/2.8, EF-S 18-55 and 50/1.8 and still is moderately compact.

More and more often I find that when I decide to really take a 'carry-on' camera with me, I shrug and think 'if it's worth taking the camera, then it's worth taking the BIG camera' and take the 20D. But that might be just me. The pics are just so much better.

I have got some bewildered looks from friends when whipping out the 20D and taking some shots at a get-together ... still, they are getting used to it.

Best regards,
Andy
