AWESOME stuff Nick! Really cool! I'm fortunate enough where I'm gonna be coming back to the City (I live in Michigan) Monday for a vacation with the wife... I'm hoping to get some more candid photography this time...
What lens(es) did you use for these? I'm bringing my 24-105 and 16-35 and am torn as to whether to bring my 35L or 50L... I'm leaning towards the 35L but my gut and heart are telling me 50L (maybe cuz its my fav lens???) lol

Thanks man!
I had my 5D MKII + 24-105L and 135L with me.
50L will also do nicely. I've been using that until recently where I felt the 135L was better suited for street candids...that and how I can crop the heck out of 5D MKII files opens up new possibilities for sure.:D

Ya know, I was in fact thinking of bringing my 135L with me as well- I think I'd be able to get some nice shots in Central Park with it without being obtrusive... You might have inspired be to bring it :-)

BTW - Was that shot of the Empire State Bld taken from 28th street? I was told shooting from the south side of the building, along 28th street yielded a nice view to shoot the entire building?

I'm not the brave type when shooting street, so the 135L is perfect. It's not white so it doesn't stand out too much, and it's long enough to keep me at a distance. Exactly what I need! On a FF, it's perfect!

That was shot on 5th avenue between 33rd and 34th street. Just a straight on shot from across the street from the main entrance. It's not the best angle, but I thought it was an interesting angle.
Here's a few more. These were down the block towards the East side.

Great shots of a great city taken by a local. What could be better? Your affection for the place comes through in your work :)

Nice series of shots!
I'm heading to the city in August just for the day and am trying to figure out what lens to bring. I'd like to bring just one and I'm leaning towards 24-105. What do you think for a crop? I'm not bringing my 17-55 because the zoom ring sticks a little. I thought about the 10-22 but I'm afraid I'll miss the closeups. 17-40 would get me wide but again maybe not enough zoom. I probably will just wander around in the Village or Central Park or if it's bad weather I'll end up at the Metropolitan.

On a crop, I'd probably want at least 17mm for NYC. It's not absolutely necessary, but that's what I would bring. For instance, for my 5D MKII, I'd definitely bring the 24-105L, which actually is a bit wider than 17mm on a crop camera.
But yeah, if it's just one lens, then the 24-105L might fit the bill. Tall buildings are one thing. There are lots of other things to shoot in NYC so you should be ok.

Thank you Nick. I'll mull it over for the next month and I may end up taking two lenses after all, we'll see.

Great urban shots nick. It must be fun to be able to shoot in such a dynamic city.
My sons are currently visiting NY and I'm sure one of them will be putting my 24-105 to good use with his 40D.
Just a quick question if I may, I asked my son to pick up a 135L for me from B&H and they are out of stock of course, do you know anywhere else in central NY that may have stock for around the $1,000 mark?
