How do you do this? Say it's completely dark and I want to light up the car only. I tried doing it a few weeks ago and all I got was uneven flashs/reflections on the car and light marks from where I was with the flash. Do you need softboxes or umbrellas or something?

Thanks

I got my 1st flash today, so a whole world of learning to do, but i'd imagine a large softbox would do the job. ;)

I have experimented with this technique and got a few good results, its pretty fun once you learn how to do it. I used an LED cordless worklight because they create an almost pure white light. For the Shots with the cingle bright light, i used an LED flashlight. There were no flshes used in any of these, just a very long exposure and some very careful "painting". The trick is to keep moving when your doing it or else the camera will pick up a "ghost" of you.

yeah, I dont want to see the lines of the light. So I'll try and get a nice light to shoot far away.

You don't want to shoot far away, as the light will get harsher, the further away you get. Cheapest option is probably an umbrella. Experiment with shoot through and reflective to see which works best for the job. Best bet is one with the black cover, as you get both options with the one brolly that way. ;)

set yourself a soft box put your led in it, then adjust your iso and f/s till you get a good DOF v lighting.

here is a link so some of my work... excuse some of the exposures

Ok, so are you saying put the light in a softbox and shine it at the car? Am I reading that correctly?
