Anybody have experience with portable drives such as this Verbatim Portable hard drives (http://www.adorama.com/SMD320UFEHD.html) - using them for storage in the field? There's a number of different models, capacities, prices. They operate off power off the USB bus.
I thought they looked good, but I have had horrendous problems thru the years with total crap personal devices such as wolverines, photosafe, hyperdrive, etc.

They are excellent products. They are the former Firelite drives, having been bought out by Verbatim. Can't go wrong with them.

Thanks. I'll look into them. I starting to lean back toward something that is self-contained with a CF card slot.

I thought about that, having a portable card reader/hard drive, but with CF cards being reasonable now, I have tons and keep them in a Think Tank

I hold 10 4GB cards in it and number them so I keep them straight. With that much memory, I don't need to download while shooting an event. That is enough memory to shoot a whole wedding without worrying about running out or needing to download. I paid an average of $16/card. Makes it cheaper than buying a portable hard drive with card slot.

Take a lok at the NExto HDs - they operate completely without a PC/notebook - just slide your card in the slot and you're good to go. They are very fast and don't take up much space. I love mine.

Well, I may. Mostly because it's just about the only one left. I've tried the Wolverine, the Digital Foci Photo Safe, the Hyperdrive, and one other (can't remember the name) and every darn one of them have failed.

I've used a Hyperdrive for a year now without any trouble. Simple, efficient, I like it and have given it as a gift to several friends.
