Hi guys, Ive never posted much here but this website has always been a reference for me in terms of advice and inspiration.

anyway, I just got an offer to shoot 2 concerts (each with 3-5 bands). the thing is: the company hired me are saying they pay $100 per night. I think its cheap but I dont know how long each concert will last, although using common sense it probably wont be short.

another thing that got me worried was that they want, and i quote: "Promotional rights to photos of use for bands, photographer, and Capital (So everyone can promote the photos without paying for them)"

that just sounds wrong, i'd never give away my photo's copyright for free. Im from vancouver just so you know which copyright laws im talking about.

what should I do? I have to be honest that I wish I could say, you could either pay me better and get good quality or rip someone else off for crappy photos, but I dont have much of a portfolio in concerts to back me up.

well, here's the story, let me know what yo guys think

thanks

well they are not asking for your photos for free...they are paying you! how established are these bands? $100 for photos for small bands sounds like a good deal to me.

if you think the price is too low, then make a counter offer. but don't be surprised if they walk and go looking for the next shooter, esp since you mention yr relative lack of experience in this area.

They don't get the copyright, they get a license, which is pretty normal.
IMO $100 is (too) low.

thanks for the opinion guys. What I did was reply to them accepting the job and asked to meet them to discuss details and what not. unfortunately they didnt reply after that.

rene, thanks for clarifying that, i think i still need to study more about the photo business and get whats what straight. and I do agree $100/night is low, considering shows with 3-5 bands go on for hours on end. anyway, didnt get it but thanks for the feedback

smoke/our hometown didster/another damn disappointment/and authority zero was almost 5 hours from doors open to the last song of the night.

the amount of work and time that goes into that..if i were being paid.. 100 would be too low. maybe 150 or 200, i would think about that. the time that its going to take in post should be considered too.

i love concert photography, and Narlus, and rene are awesome people to listen too. granted they both came in at different angles. it just depends.. but honestly i would say 100 per night.. for all that work.. is too little.

I noticed that you capitalized "Capital". Does that mean Capital Records?
