Is this thread in English, because I have NO idea what you're talking about. ;)
(Allright ... I'm reasonably perceptive - so you must be talking about football or cricket ... likely football ... er, soccer. Unless you're a big Cincinnati Reds fan.)
Congrats to the Liverpool FC Reds ... whoever they are ... whatever they did! :)

It's OK...it's a British thing:D
Actually maybe it's an American thing...as when you play international matches (eg World Series) you only invite your neighbours to make sure you can win...we actually play the rest of the world :p

I hear what you're saying ... On the other hand, our leagues (Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, National Football League, National Basketball Association) already include all the best players in the world ... so who is left to play? When two teams are playing in the World Series, their rosters include the best baseball players from all over the globe (wherever baseball is played, that is) including Japan, Canada, Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc.

The World series was named after the newspaper that originally sponsored the event “The World” so we can forgive them for what appears to be, at first sight, their megalomania.

It is not an English (or even a British thread)!! Football (soccer) is THE world game. Liverpool's defeat of Chelsea on Tuesday night was taken live in 142 countries!!
The final (Liverpool V AC Milan) is on the 25 May.

How about the NFL. The winner of the Super Bowl is called "World Champion"...where did that come from?

I don't know where it came from, but I can guarantee that there is no team - anywhere outside of the NFL ... anywhere in the world - that can beat the NFL champion in American football. Therefore, I think we can safely refer to the Superbowl victor as "world champions" of their particular sport.
I'm not arguing that American athletes are the best in these sports (definitely not true with the exception of American football). I'm just pointing out that our leagues - even though all the teams are located in the U.S. and Canada - are truly international and contain the best athletes in the world for their respective sports. Therefore claims of world championships are reasonable ... and likely accurate.

I would beg to differ and say that whoever wins the Olympic Gold at baseball, basketball and ice-hockey (North American sports played at the Olympics) are the true world champions as that is a competition that puts international teams against one another and is not open exclusively to teams from one pre-defined geographical area.
Current holders men:
Baseball - CUBA
Basketball - ARGENTINA
Ice Hockey - CANADA (GB winner 1936 :))
Current holders women:
Baseball - not an olympic sport for women
Basketball - USA
Ice Hockey - CANADA
And for prides sake
4x100m relay - GREAT BRITAIN! :D:D:D

Just like no one can beat the NBA world champions, right ?
BTW, the Premier League rocks! Best football league in the world IMO

I would beg to differ and point out that (at least) 90 percent of the male athletes playing for the countries that won those medals are playing in our leagues. The exception would be the Cubans in baseball ... we have the ones who have successfully defected, but many remain.
That's exactly my point ... all of those great athletes - from all over the world - who compete in the Olympics are playing in our professional leagues. Take the best of the best ... from each country ... put them together in one league ... and you have the best teams in the world for that sport. Sort of a world all-star team. The champions of our leagues would beat any Olympic team ... but it would be impossible to prove because the championship team would have to be dismantled to FORM the Olympic teams.

What about the so called 'dream team' in basketball then? All the best American players and I think they ended up in 6 place. Or is it just that America does not produce enough good players to compete internationally?

You're completely missing my point. I didn't say the U.S. (Dream Team) had the best players OR the best team. I'm saying the NBA has the best players and the best teams. The NBA is made up of players from (I'm repeating myself) ALL OVER THE WORLD ... not just the U.S. The NBA champion Detroit Pistons would win the Olympics, but they can't play because they would need to be dismantled (they had or have players from the U.S., Argentina, Puerto Rico, Turkey and Serbia).
Edit: Not that it matters, but the U.S. team won the bronze medal at the Olympics ... just a little better than 6th.

I get what you are saying.
But I still believe that to be world champions you really have to prove yourself against teams from across the globe. I don't know enough about the NBA or baseball to know whether teams from Japan, Cuba and Argentina ever get a shot at playing these guys.
I'm an Skins fan and know that in their prime they were Superbowl champions and the best in the world - but then in the 1980's there were no other professional leagues in the world. Even today there are no leagues to rival the NFL.
Case in point - Manchester United claimed to be the best team in the World when they entered the World Club Tournament. They lost.
If the World Series champions played in a tournament with teams fron Japan, Germany, Cuba, etc and won then they could make the claim.

But there is no other place in the world that play American football, except Canada, and even then, the US & Canada don't play each other. So I think in the case of the NFL, "US Champions" is more accurate.

I think that baseball's "World Series" pretty much is true - but that doesn't mean that there aren't teams around the world that can beat them. MLB has a very diverse roster of players. The NHL at least gets it right because they have the Stanley Cup - not world champs. The NBA is probably the one that most deserves the title of World Champs. there are some good teams around the world but I don't think any of them would survive a season in the NBA. Besides the goal of nearly all of the world's basketball players is to play in the NBA. O well, we could go on all day. But I do like to watch soccer - sorry football (not MLS). Football's intensity is incredible - I think that's why I like it. It's the best game in the world.

See my prevoius post. The World Series is named after the newspaper that originally sponsored the event it was never intended to be a world series in geographical terms.

Sport os one of the few really international endevours. Whilst Liverpool were playing Chelsea in the semi final there were presious few English players on the park. I have no problem with this. Lets all learn to be more inclusive, and then have a fight :D

Wow! Well they say you learn something new everyday...and 'they' are not wrong! I didn't know that...but it's ironic that a Brit is the one to point this out:D
This fact will be repeated a various opportunities in many pubs over the next week!

That's becuase no-one else plays American Football (as we call it here!) Or rather, no-one knows how to play it! I remember a little phase when I was at school in the 80's of NFL-mania...I vaguely supported the Miami Dolphins...without really understand what the hell was going on!!
We still get the Superbowl matches on TV here, but only about 3 people watch it! Although it's a lot more of an all round entertainment show than our big sporting matches...that's one thing you do a lot better. But if you could ask Ms Jackson to keep her boobs to herself this year we'd be grateful!
Otherwise we'll have to get Skeleton-Spice (aka Mrs Beckham) to wap hers out at the FA Cup Final!!!

Not to mention Russians, Swedes, Czechs, Slovakians, etc. ... the leagues are all the better for the diversity (and talent).
