...we all know and love the way these programs use their fantastic software to enhace security camera footage, but tonight I think they pushed the limits.

The episode with the sleep walker just screened here, in it, they determine there is someone just outside the image due to the presense of a shadow, no problems, lets zoom in on the persons eye in the image, they said they would start with a 100x zoom  , then look at the relection in her eye, and correct for curature, bingo, a clear image of the suspect

If they are going to go that far, why don't they just include a time machine, and go back and stop the murders in the first place, the chances of either working are probably about the same.

End Rant.

And worse thing is that clients think you can make perfect background on scene (or anything else) after that in PS even if it's really ugly weather on shooting. Oh you know I watched that movie last time and they did it. It's just two clicks and you have it.
And on end you are idiot who doesn't know not even those basics which every police officer in movies can do

I saw that episode recently and laughed out load when they did that!

In CSI-Vegas they did similar with a polaroid. Zoom in on a picture of a room to read the address off a bottle of pills on the shelf in the background.

I love all the CSI's . . . i have a friend who does DNA analysis for the NJ State Police. She hates these shows because the scientists can analyze several blood samples and come up with DNA matches on the same shift. She'll be like, "That takes days, weeks, sometimes months to do!!!" That's when I come in and say, "Well . .. hello?!?! They only have one hour (40 minutes 'cause of commercials) to get it done!" or i also say, "That's why they're on TV show and you're not . . . they work faster than you!" http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I enjoy CSI the original. Never watched the others. It's a very interesting show, but clearly, you can do test results so damn fast, and I remember the address on the medication bottle! Not bad from a cheap polaroid. I may have to sell my 20D and gear.

Apparently shows like CSI have become a great pain in the butt for prosecutors that have jury's that want to see evidence like they see in CSI.

One thing that always irked me about CSI is when they are on the road collecting evidence, such as paint on a guard rail or a busted taillight or even a smoke. They collect it all and some how it always turns out that garbage on the side of the road has a link to the case. When if you've ever walked a long a highway or road they usually are littered with junk.

The show is obviously fake but its pretty entertaining.

The worst and I mean worst digital inhancement on screen that I have ever seen was in the Will Smith movie "Enemy of the state" where they turn around the shopping bag and on the other side they see a shawdow and figure out what is inside it. Yeah right. I must be doing something wrong with Photoshop! PS 5 didn't do that.

Classic film: "Blade Runner", Harrison Ford does the same.

But there again, it was set in the future, and myabe the Canon 1Dstuv Mk.23356 will be able to do those sorts of tricks. :)

It all goes back to the 60's flick "Blow up" (where it was done in .. a "Dark room" no less ;)

But yep.. BladeRunner is the pioneer of the "electronic image manip" on screen far as I can recall as well. That was great scene in itself.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's all made for TV, but I still bet that if the CSI shows had been showing when I was a teenager, I'd have wanted to be one.

I love the Vegas one, that team is the best. More humour. The Miami one I grew to like and now I find Horatio hilarious. He's just so darn cool all the time. Hardly ever smiles, always has a poker face and with some tough guy line. LOL The NY version just began airing in Sweden, but so far my family and I haven't been impressed.

I really don't watch them much.. but your right.. David Caruso is HILARIOUS! He is also such a horrific "over actor" http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2hdzu/pics/roflmao.gif Oh my God.. "mr Cool" I love it!

The only guy on TV who over does it as much (maybe more) than Caruso is that Vincent Danafrio on one of those Law and Order shows... he's such a "scene stealer" you can see all the other cast members rolling there eyes as he chews up the scenery! They must all positively hate the guy!

Same thing with fingerprint matches... it takes about 30 seconds on CSI
Live Scan finger prints can be identified in a matter of minutes depending on traffic volume and connection speed. I have received returns from national and state databases in 15 minutes or less. I have also had it take hours.
In the local agency that I worked we would occasionally have upper management approach the crime lab supervisor with; "Why cant you just .............. like on T-V?
The crime lab guy would stare incredulously at the Captain then see that the Captain really meant it.
About that time the sergeant would tell him; "Sure, with a $10 million start up cost and a $2 million annual budget minimum.
The science is there to accomplish much of what they do on CSI (remember it is only a 48 minute show) but the costs are so enormous that few single agencies dan afford it.

Claire

Yeah, Caruso's Mr. Cool in that show. I didn't get into the Miami one until I spent a summer watching the reruns. Omg, that was a hilarious summer. After a season of watching Horatio I even found the guy attractive! LOL

Oh, and I absolutely dig Greg in the Vegas one. Mom and I kept trying to figure out what new hairdo he would have in the episode. hehe The new Miami guy looks a lot like Greg, both are cute too. Grissom's funny in a charming way. Warrick's a hottie and Marg Helgenberger is great.

Marg Helgenberger is gorgeous :) Catherine is totally my favorite of the CSI women. She's just keeps getting hotter as she gets older. Calleigh from Miami is hot when she's handling firearms in the ballistics lab . . . I'm starting to find Stella from New York to be very attractive also

My fiance loves Warrick Brown from Vegas . . . she screamed "woohoo" in the episode that he took his shirt off and went into a pool.

David Caruso is HILARIOUS! He is also such a horrific "over actor" there was an episode where he heard gunshots as an armored car was getting robbed. He had time to put on his SUNGLASSES before drawing his gun at the robbers.

do you notice that everytime he talks to a child, his head is positioned horizontally?

My friends love it when i do my Horatio pose . . . both hands on my waist with each doing a slight lift on my blazer. . . pay attention and you'll see what i'm talking about.

The science is there to accomplish much of what they do on CSI (remember it is only a 48 minute show) but the costs are so enormous that few single agencies dan afford it.I skimmed an article in an issue of U.S. News where shows like CSI are making it more difficult for real-life forensics because jurys are expecting the "perfect" evidence, which can't always be achieved with real-life low budgets

My mom used to get annoyed at Calleigh's voice. She doesn't comment on it any more though, guess we're used to it now. It's a bit high pitched though.

Warrick's a hottie period. Gotta love those blue contacts. Wait, did I miss an episode where he takes his shirt of and jump into a pool? :(

Oh my god, Horatio's sunglasses! That's what makes him hilarious! LOL And how he by the end of almost every episode puts them on, puts his hands by his waist and stands staring in the crook while the police leads him away.

Yup it grates on my nerves when ever they're doing GIS as its so far from real its funny. The least they could do is use real software like The District does (which is actually pretty real as far as my field goes)

In "National Treasure" they steal an ID card by shooting a man wearing it with apparently 100mm lens on 35 SLR from considerable distance, crop the id card, straighten it up and add own photo there. :)

I love all the CSI versions, and as had been said here, they are hugely entertaining. Sometimes they go way overboard fictionally, like when they were investigating the death of an NYC bike messenger. He was your everyday bike messenger, scraggly clothes, just making enough to get by, but guess what? He had on an advanced heart rate monitor strapped into him, one capable of dowloading your biofeedback into a computer, and that's what they used to trace his route around Manhattan. Well he could be a serious cyclist with a secret training agenda, but the episode didn't show him as such. My wife turned to me and asked "Do messengers wear those HRM's?" That is what the episode seemed to imply.

I still like watching CSI though. Great entertainment. What cameras do they use anyway? They have those logos covered with tape.....

MazerRakhm

I can only speak towards the original set in Vegas since we watch that one pretty regularly, and yes most of them are N****, who I’m sure is paying for the “exposure” of their cameras.

I mainly say "exposure" because none of the characters use the same camera. At first I was thinking maybe the department would make them provide their own as part of their kit that they all have, but then rethought that idea since they would probably everyone to collect evidence the same way, which makes me think they would want them to have the same type of camera especially with the difference in flash types/resolutions and how they affect the pictures.

One of the characters (Warrick) uses a DSLR model, (Some episodes with flash, some without.) while the others all use what appears to be different Coolpix models. I don’t actually know the other brands model numbers enough to be specific as to who uses what.

Ok, I took one for the team last night and watched 2 episodes of the original series in Vegas. I know, a really hard job.

But I did see what cameras they were using in both, in one they used either a D50 or D70 and in the other one of the Coolpix 8k series.

Of course they don’t sit still long enough to see a model number, but they flashed it long enough to see the logo and shape of the camera.

well my 2 cents:
if they showed the average csi team (in real life) sifting through paper work for an entire hour, would you watch? its called tv. believe it or not most of what you see on tv is not real (also know as fiction). the coyote in the road runner cannot have a giant boulder crush him and walk away, spiderman does not exist and if he did it is physically impossible for him to swing from web to web, and so on. Its called suspension of disbelief. So sit down take your brain out and enjoy the show. :)

Watched last nite's CSI-LV finale directed by Quentin Tarantino. It was a pretty cool finale imho. At least better than Everybody loves Raymond's finale.
I wonder if this would inspire NBC to hire Peter Jackson for an episode of ER or L&O. :p

you'd end up with a 9 hour 3 part season finale with lots of cgi. i'd watch that!

as for csi, the storyline is fun to watch but i HATE, HATE :evil: when they used those stupid improbable methods to solve cases. and i especially hate their computers. they should really make the gui more realistic (as well as get rid of those cheesy computer sound effects, kind of reminds me of cheap star trek effects)

Are you saying Dell computers produce cheesy sound effect? :p Just j/k.

I have seen many 'DELL" sign in CSI:LV. Last nite's finale showed a big DELL at the back of the lab's LCD monitor. I guess DELL and Nonik pay enough big bucks for the appearance in CSI.

I don't let the improbable methods bug me too much. If I did I'd have a hell lot of problems watching tons of other shows and movies. Ah, all the lawyer shows I used to watch. And all those action movies... hehe I doubt real court cases are as interesting as they are on TV. As someone suggested; I leave my brain at home and just watch the show/movie. :)

Ok, last nite's CSI:NY is just pure BS. This is what happened: Gary Sinise was reviewing the tape recorded by the surveillant camera. There was a lady and a shadow of another person in the clip. BTW, the clip captured the lady's head as well as her feet, with the angle of about 45 degree above her left eye. To find out whose shadow it belongs to, Gary zoomed in 100x on her eye, based on the reflection on her cornia, he found the suspect. What type of technology allows this kind of zooming and interpolation?
It's just pure http://initial-d.com/forums/images/smilies/bsflag.gif

It's a fun show to watch, but as many people have stated, it's only TV and obviously cases wouldn't be solved that easily.

The legal profession has even coined the term "The CSI Effect" when it comes to questioning potential jurors.

IIRC, there was some debate back during the OJ trial regarding this. The prosecution (after the fact) came to the conclusion that all the forensics (regardless of accuracy) were just too much for John Q Juror to sit through. The real deal just wasn't neat and tidy like it is in dramatic TV.
