View Full Version : What's wrong with my SX10IS?

Hi everyone,

First post here - please be nice ;)

I bought the SX10IS about 6 months ago and have only just noticed this problem with my photos.

As you can see from the attached photo, there is this circle thing next to the plane. It appears on all my photos, but is most prominent when in 20x zoom. It's not so bad in other points of zoom, but if I look closely in my other photos it is there.

From what I can tell, there is nothing on my lens and I have tried to wipe my lens clean many times. You can definitely see it in the viewfinder as well as on the LCD screen. I took a photo of the LCD screen, and if you look to the left of the AF point you can see it.

I'm very afraid it may be something internal which may mean I have to take it in for repair.

Can anyone experienced enlighten me as to what the issue may be? Dust? Water droplet?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

is it in the same spot the whole time? have you tried cleaning the front element

Yes it is in the same spot the whole time.

If by front element you mean the lens, then yes, I have used a lens cloth and wiped it quite a few times. I have also visually inspected it, and apart from a few dust specks, it looks clean (well... at least I think so).

If you don't mean the lens.... what is the front element? :)

Thought so - sorry I'm kinda new at this.

When I'm not zoomed it, the spot is larger but not as noticeable, presumably because the lens isn't focussed in enough?

When I zoom in, the spot shrinks, but the edges become much sharper, and more noticeable in photos.

I dont know exactly how the camera is designed but it sounds like it has a problem with one of the elements inside of the camera

More examples. You might have to look hard to see the spots, but they are definitely there in the same location.

I have a theory - I think it could be a water droplet. Don't ask me how something like that gets in there, but if it is what I think it is, how could I get it out?

I think you're right, it's a droplet (or the remains of one) on your sensor since it doesn't move and is about the same size every time. Nothing you can do about it. Go back and look at some of your first photos and see if you can find it there, because you're going to have to send it in to get it cleaned and if you can establish that it was there from the beginning they'll be more likely to accept it as a warranty issue.

I've got no idea how water managed to get in there without there being some gap in the body somewhere. Maybe that's the warranty problem?

I hope this doesn't turn out to be an expensive issue :(
