This competition is a way of showcasing your best photographs from the last year. Its all in the name of fun so please don't take it too seriously! Everyone is welcome to enter and I look forward to seeing all the great submissions!

BB :D

Timetable:

Landscapes and Cityscapes (Closes 31st May)
Abstract/Other (Closes 31st July)
Wildlife (Closes 30th September)
Sports (Closes 30th November)
Note: To enter the overall POTN Photographer of the Year 2005 contest you must submit a photo in at least one of these categories

Entry requirements:

The photo must have been taken in the 12 months preceding the closing date
The photo must not have been entered in the 2004 POTN photographer of the year contest (NB. I’m aware that the last contest only closed in December. Therefore, this rule is so we get a fresh new set of photos.)
Each member may submit one photo to each of the contests
This photo may be changed at any time up to the closing date for submissions
Post processing - nothing that substantially changes the original composition of the image.
Photos must be no larger than 800 pixels at the longest dimension. Also, please try and keep the filesize down to under 200k if possible to make viewing the gallery easier for modem users.
No framing of pictures, text or copyright notices.
Send your photos to potncontest at gmail dot com
Please include your username when you send me the photo

Voting:

Following each closing date, there will be two or three weeks of voting. The exact length will be a practical decision based on the number of photos.
Given the large number of expected entries, I’ll adopt the same voting method as the last POTN POY contest. The photos will be grouped into sets of approximately 10. The winner of each group will be put forward into a play off. A third or fourth round of voting will be used if there are a sufficient number of entries.
The voting system is subject to change if EE/another better option becomes available

Is it really Landscapes OR Cityscapes? I mean, we are only allowed to enter 1 photo, so, it may be difficult to cover both in one shot...

Question on rule that says no changing the composition of the image.

Does cropping count?

I ask because cropping changes the composition of the image, but I crop the .... out of my images to make the most impact possible and it is rare when I don't crop. I don't always like 2x3 format. Square is good also.

Big_B

That rule is aimed at restricting excessive PS use, not cropping. I look forward to your submission :D

The photos are now online everyone! (http://www.pbase.com/sam_blackie/potn)

With the exception of one photo, everything should be online, so please could you check that your photo is there. I need to know of any errors by midnight GMT Thursday.

I'll be launching the voting process friday morning so keep posted for more details. You can see from the website that the photos are in three groups (these groups may change slightly). My plan is to have a separate (simultaneous) vote for each of these. Approximately the top 33% of photos from each group will go through to the next and final round.

I'm happy to have any suggestions/comments. :)

I should add that I haven't had time to title the photos yet. I'll try and get that done this evening.

I know You requested that individual photos are not commmented so I will not do that but I will say that it was very difficult to choose my personal favorites.

I know what you mean, I still haven't decided how I'll vote.

So how is the POTN Photographer of the Year 2005 decided? Will there be some kind of scoring of the three or five best in each category and then the total score counts, or will there be a final final with the winners from each category only, or...?

Hi G3Owner,

The overall contest will be held around December 05 and details of it won't be finalised until closer to the time. By submitting a photo in at least one category you ensure that, whatever the rules, you will be eligible for the contest.

I'll be posting up a contest thread for the next subject (Abstract/Other) in the next couple of days. If anyone has any comments to make based on the experience of the last contest, now would be a good time to let me know.

Cheers,

Sorry, I've been away at a wedding all weekend. Yes, other means a free choice of topic. The only requirement is that the photo complies with the rules set out in the first page of this thread.

Given that it has taken so long for me to reply, i'll give you until midnight Monday to submit your photo (assuming you still want to)
