Hi Everyone...
I am running intel x58 i7 M/B... and have a 1T WD E-Sata external HDD... When copying or doing file transfers i only get arround 160-200 mb/sec, is this not surpose to be 3Gb/sec? i have checked the drivers and this seems to be up to date...

160-200mb/s should only be for a second or two, usually maxes out at 80mb/s or so for long files. The data path is rated for 3gb/s, but hdds are not. Hence why you can use an FIS switch to make one e-sata port hold five disks all going at max speed.

The only way to saturate the 3Gbps the SATA bus can do is with solid state disks, and you might even need a raid array of them to do it. 100MB/sec wouldn't be a bad speed from a hard drive.

Not might, do. Even the fastest are only 300mb/s or so (2.4Gbps). If you really need speed, OCZ and a few others sell a PCI-E card (note it's not SATA at all, so you can't boot from it) that has up to about 640GB and gets 1500mb/s... for more than your computer, camera, and possibly life insurance.

thanks so much for the feedback guys... looks like i will have to be happy with the current speed for now...
Cheers

Wrong specs... my memory is failing. 510mb/s (still faster than 3gbps limit though) with up to 1tb http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/oem_solutions/ocz_z_drive_pci_express_ssd

I was thinking about the Fusion IO when i mentioned those specs:

Wow! Sort of reminiscent of the I-Ram, nice to see that some development is happening with this sort of storage.
