I have been shooting birds now for about a year. This time of year I shoot a lot of herons and eagles. About 2 weeks ago I had the opportunity to shoot a eagle in a tree top. I have a Canon Rebel xti and use a 73-300 lens and a good tripod. When I got home and looked at he pictures I was quite pleased with them. Even tho they were quite far, I was able to crop them and get a good photo. I was shooting at iso 400, and f9. Yesterday while parked by the same tree, ( much closer and much brighter day) looking for a kingfisher, when the eagle appeared and landed in the same tree. Well I got lots of pictures. Was about the distance that I cropped the other picture. Used iso 100... at first at f 5.6 and 1/400 but then upped the f stop to 9. 1/200 at 100. When I got home found the pictures where not as clear at the last ones I had taken and found that the white head looked a bit blown out. So..question 1... should I have upped the iso to say 200 and up the f stop to f 11 to get more detail in the head ( did find a big difference when I changed from f5.6 to f9) or stay at iso 100 and up the f stop which would lower my speed. And what do you do to control the blown out of the eagles head. Will attach both pictures to show the difference. The first picture is cropped the second isn't. I did have the polarizer on for the second shot.
