I have the 70-200 f4L and looking at it I can'ty say it's 'white' - Is it supposed to be?
More a very light grey brown, as far off FFFFFF as FFFFCC is degree of hue wise, although it isn't that colour, but it's as strong a shade different
I think
Does it show up so on your screens (I'm on a Powerbook 1.5 G4)?

Well ... it is closer to white than black. It showed up fine on my computer, but then again I'm using a Powerbook 1.5 GHz too!
As for the actual color tone, it's a light latte brown.

For whatever reason, it appears that the F4 L's are an off white.......guess they become whiter as the L 'sbecome more $$$$. They should color them green.

And the TC's are cameleons, changing colour to match the 'white' of the lens it's attached to ;).

A light latte brown, indeed, my thought precisely!
Yet in all the brochures it's a very white white!
Will it double as a thermos flask?

It's definitely latte. Belmondo's mug shot posted a little while ago clearly testifies this.

Yes but is it SUPPOSED to be?
Mugshot, whose mug got shot?

You're right. That lens of yours definitely is NOT white. I have a feeling you were sold an old stale lens that's been sitting on the shelf too long. The color change might be due to fading or just plain dirt accumulation. Have you tried cleaning the lens with a soft moist rag with a little bit of sud on it?

You can always try to retun the lens on the basis that the colour is not as advertised in the Canon brochures.

I bought a refurbished 70-200 f/4 lens from B&H Photo a couple years ago and it too is off-white. It works perfectly though so I can't really complain. It is quiet, quick to focus and pictures look great. Who cares what shade of white the barrel is?

The guy I want to sell it to in a year or so?

If it takes excellent pictures why would he care either?
Honestly, I don't know why some of the lenses are off-white. Maybe they are the imported version? I don't know.

Different batch of paint, maybe ? Anyway, if it works fine, who cares ? :D

Okay, I felt like a complete dumba$$ but I just called Canon USA to ask this question since I have this lens and it's something I've wondered about also. The Canon rep I spoke to said that some of their lenses are an off-white shade. It is completely normal.

From what I've read the white doesn't get as hot in the sun as a black lens.

I own a few 'white' lenses, and have owned other in the past. There does seem to be some variation in color. It might be related to age because the most 'discolored' lens I owned was also the oldest. All the newer lenses are very close in color.

Then why don't they make white cameras? Just thinking aloud :D

Thats exactly right.....its for heat resistance.....and so everyone around you stares at you and asks you what type of lens it is....lol

Hmmm...
I just thought of the slightly off-white color as being "Canon" white, kind of like CoKe Cola Red (it is really a specific shade of red). Both of my white lenses and both extenders are all exactly the same shade as has been ever Canon lens I have seen, with I think one exception that was a touch whiter (I figured they bleached it at some point to clean it up, since it was used).
I always figured the pictures in the Canon brochures was because they used their own software to do white balance before printing, instead of PS like everyone else.

Well, thank heavens, now I can sleep at night - I've been up since I got my "L"'s pondering that very question!! ;)
P.S. - Nice to see there's someone at least as anal as I am on the forum!!

Nice setup by the way. I wanted the 20D but when the 300D dropped $100 in price I just had to snap one up and finally get into digital SLRs. I already had the 70-200mm L lens and decided to buy the 17-40mm L and get rid of my 28-135mm IS lens.

Why, clearly it's another 'angle' on the topic of white balance. Some folk will go to any lengths to discuss that topic! ;)

Maybe not. Some people are just blessed with remarkably stress-free lives.

yeah that's what I read about the reasoning behind it - to keep the heat lower when used for extended periods in tne sun.
Fat chance of that happening here!

Yep, thats the colour they are supposed to be. I think its just easier for Canon to call them white......Canon light brown, Canon Grey, Canon Latte.....they just don't sound as nice...lol
