it's effectiveness depends on the lighting conditions, obviously. but if there's any benefit aside from cutting back on flare, it's protection of the front element. if you've got the hood & don't mind a bit more bulk, i'd say go for it.

Thanks,
I have a uv filter, and protection is good ...
it's just that it's a lot of lens to carry around on the street. and then add 3-4 more inches for the hood.
Also I found the search engine on this site and see it works well..... So now I will quit asking so many questions already answered here..

Thanks for the patience.
Eric

In general, we probably all agree with you. However, at a photo seminar, the instructor was saying that we should all forget about UV filters, since most lenses will filter that anyway. The UV filter is just one more thing to get dirty or else degrade the real lens. I do not necessarily agree.

The lens hood certainly does a job of reducing flare, and it is the "auto bumper" to protect the main part of the lens in case I do something totally stupid.

I was going to order a specific long zoom lens, and the manufacturer's web site said that it comes with hood and case. When I ordered it, the vendor said that the hood is extra cost. I guess they know what the customer is going to do (pay the extra money, take the shipment, and then never order from that vendor again).

Elm54, How do you like that lens? I am trying to decide on a good F2.8 lens for general shooting. The wide angle side of me really wants a 16-35, but the practical side (which pays the bills) says that I should get a 24-70...

Got any test pics to share?

I have only had the lens for 1 day. I am a real novice and even newer to my camera. I bought the lens as an all around basic lens ( street , and attempts at projects. ) I am still getting to know my equipment.
That said ...
The lens is big and heavier than other brand lenses I tried at bhphoto. It is real clear and I feel it is delivering a sharp image. The 24-mm side is definatly (sp?) showing me more than my 50 prime does but not what a real wide angle does. ( I like the sigma 14mm ) But am not ready for more. The 70mm side has shown me my need for a tripod. But I do like the range over the prime. It's been cold and grey in NY since I got it so I haven't been doing anything on the street. I took a few shots out my back window. And a few around my apartment, nothing very interesting.
I haven't really decided ( or know of a good place, my funds are pretty low at the moment ) on a way to share my stuff and don't really feel like anything I am doing is ready for display or near what I have seen posted, but am open to suggestions.
