300D owner, and I am reading about these firmware hacks that will allow you to manually select the AI Servo in any of the manual settings. The more I read the more confused I become. I don't know what other benefits/problems occur with these, but I would love to have AI Servo available in manual.

Please advise! I read success stories and I read horror stories about this. Some say it changes from English to another language. I want to keep it simple.

Thanks in advance. And does anyone have an extra 70-200m is, in perfect condition that they don't want anymore?? Just checking:D!

lol!! Don't think that'll happen.

As for the firmware, I have debated the same thing. I probably will not do it now as I am buying a 20D next week. I will still be interested to hear the responses though.

Good Luck

Medic, I just had a great idea! If you give me your old 300D and any related equipment, then I could sell both out 300D's and have enough money for me buy a 20D also!! Isn't that a great idea! Think how happy we both would feel! You would have the satisfaction of helping a lowly 300D'er out, with the joy that giving brings, and you will be happy because you will be getting a 20D also! I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner! Do you need my ship to address?:D:D:D:D

Enjoy the camera, I am envious!! My friend has one and loves it. He calls me and just holds down the shutter button to let me hear the non-stop continuous and very fast shooting! I usually hang up on him at that point!

Just hack it. Wasia's hack works.

The wasia hack works, but nothing will give you real AI servo on a 300D.

Ha!! Sounds like something one of my friends would do.

I was going to hack my 300D, but as Tim said, nothing will give you real AI servo on the 300D unless you switch to auto sports mode......then you have to deal with noise (automatic ISO 400), jpeg instead of RAW, all auto settings......thats why I decided to take the hit to my bank account and buy the 20D. I do mostly aircraft photography so I really need the AI servo....

Good luck with your decision

Or you can hack it with the undutchables and get the true AI servo

But compared with 20D it's gonna be sucky.

Adds RAW in the sports mode... and I think (but not sure) it adds ISO selection too...

Giving you true AI servo...

Why not do it? I put the Undutchables on the day I bought my 300D and been fine. Definately in English, but there is a reported problem when changing from one language to another sometimes ... but why would you do that anyway?! On nthe Undutchables site they tell you of any outstanding issues and clearly outline what you get through its usage.

I just wanted RAW across the board and got it. Try it out for what you want. You can always swap back to Canon firmware if you need to ... do a search on how to do that. It's no big deal ...

The last time I looked into any firmware hack for the 300D there was only the one hack that I know of. Maybe a year ago. After reading this thread I get the impression there is another hack available. Undutchables? Someone please explain more/

Yes, Undutchables (danish site) offers a firmware based (?) on Wasia's but with additional features. Put it on two days ago (after pondering for some time about risks etc.) and am very happy. FEC, AV sync, focus mode - all works fine. I have noticed that on a few occasions the Metz 54-MZ3 seemed to deliver overexposed images and was sort of stuck in that overexposure mode. Switching it off an on again brought that back to normal.

There ARE several version of the Hack. I personally had to choose from two that I had downloaded. MAKE SURE you download from a reliable source. I had no problems with mine and is really happy with all the features such as FEC....
As for AI Servo, it doesn't seem to work properly but to work around it, just need to press on the shutter button several times until it activates...
Otherwise, everything is great. The hack is what prevented me from switching over to Nik*n.

Are the button labels still mixed up as with Wasia's hack? I still have the files for this hack just never used it. Which hack is the best? Can someone post the links to the best one? I've used my D-Rebel for a year without it. I'm ready to take the plunge

Could you tell me if you can select/change ISO in sports mode please ?.

Reading some more on the Unduchables, it sounds like for AI servo in creative modes, you hold down shutter button fully, and use "left button" to release shutter, is this correct ?.

Also, what I haven't been able to find out, how do force camera to use AI servo in creative modes to begin with ?.

So, if you don't want AI Servo, or need mirror lock up - is there any advantage in going for one of the hacked firmwares?

FEC, ISO speed (3200) and Size of embedded JPG is a great advantage.

Hi, I installed the Undutchables hack on my new Drebel yesterday night. I know that the new features work. But does one see a different firmware version after the hack? Mine still shows 1.1.1.

You can get AI Servo in creative modes on the 300D without the hack. Read down this thread to Caldwells post "Tricking AI servo, three ways I know... (works in ANY mode)":

Have been running Wasia (Jul 04 version) on my 300D for a couple of months no - no problems whatsoever.

It's worth it for the following features alone in my opinion:

Ability to set pic quality from SET button
Ability to change size of JPEG cpatured with RAW
Mirror Lock Up
FEC from Jump button.
