This is Greenan Castle near Ayr on the west coast of Scotland.
It dates from the 16th century
The castle was a stronghold of the Kennedies.

Below is a view from one of the arrow slits.
Imagine an attacking force of English, oops I mean French, no wait, better make that aliens.
Don't wont to upset anybody these days do we.

Very cool shot! Our lack of historical treasures of this type has been a continuing annoyance to me. If only I had my Rebel back in the 70's and 80's when I spent so much time overseas! :D

Not that we don't have some fantastic places to shoot here, but I have always had a facination with castles.

IMHO, the lack of history (intended in terms of millenniums, not centuries, that's something you have) in a certain sense is what has made America great. I'm kinda getting into philosophy here, but I am convinced - and I can say that the US is a reasonably well known country for me, I have 50% of my family on the other side of the pond since 1930 or so, and I spent myself several years there - that if America wasn't such a "young" country it would have never become what it is today.

The lack of history means also the lack of "historical friction" among people (that is something we have to fight with everyday, in the old Europe). And such absence hase made the whole mixture of people that made America what it is today to work together, act together, live together. And we all know that 100 persons working/living together are at least as strong as 200 singles.

Do not complain for lack of history, from a certain point of view its a poison. Sure, from another point of view it IS important. But sometimes, when you can go back one or two thousand years it can be an obstacle in building a country.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't regret the lack of history, just the lack of historical locations. Hell, if we could buy a few more (like the London Bridge) and ship them over here so I can take pictures of them, I'd be happy. :D :D

Sorry about the hijack of the thread, it was unintentional.

The Scots hate the English, the English hate the French, the French hate everybody and everybody hates the French.

Of course, apart from the usual morons, it's not true.
The most important thing the European Union has to offer is the fact that we are less likely to go to war with each other. Therefore we have learned from our past.
One could easily say religion is a bad thing because of what has happened in the past and indeed the present.

Don't worry about hijacking the thread, I enjoy an open and honest exchange of views.

I really like the first shot. A day of shooting in this terrain can be a realy workout, especially if you're lugging a lot of equipment around.

Pack mule here  , I don't think I could walk in a straight line if I did not have 50Lbs hanging off one shoulder. I may not use it today, but if I didn't have it with me...... I would  .

I think we have to. That way you can never say "I wish I had this filter or that lense or worst of all, my spare battery".

Besides, carrying an extra couple of pounds is good for you as we photographers don't get enough arobic activity from pressing the shutter button alone.

just the lack of historical locations

I was just out west and I was playing around in 1000 year old houses in New Mexico. There are lots of historical locations out west.
