You would be better off with the 430ex or higher.
270 can only bounce the flash up. The 430ex and higher can bounce up and side to side. The price difference for the 430ex compared to the 270 isn't bad. The 430ex offers way more options.
For what you have I would go ahead and maybe get the 580exii and maybe a 430exii to slave with.

i might get the 430ex2, but i still want a 270ex to just throw in my pocket for walkaround, or fill flash, i just want to see it in "action"

You can fill flash with the 430ex. If you're wanting a powerful flash start with the 430, but I wouldn't even waste much time with the 270 if you know you want power and versatility. I would take the 270 if I already had a few flashes, but since it's your first, I would get any version of the 430 or 580.

I agree that the 270ex is not a good choice for your only flash when using a DSLR camera (although it is great for the smaller G series cameras).
It is not powerful enough, doesn't swivel (so bouncing off the ceiling in the portrait position is virtually imposible) and is really doesn't have enough controls to make it a totally versatile unit for all flash uses. Additionally, you get a shadow cast at the bottom of the frame when shooting at below 24mm with a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens wearing a lens hood. But, you can get rid of the shadow by removing the lens hood.
However, the 270ex does fill a niche for me (I have a 550ex and a 420ex also). It is extremely light weight and balances nicely on my xxD series cameras. I can leave the flash on my camera and forget about it except when I turn it on for fill. I love to use fill flash when shooting closeups of people outdoors.
The fact that the 270ex is capable of high speed sync which allows me to shoot without worrying about keeping my shutter speed at 1/250 or longer.

thanx, i have since bought a 580ex2 to handle most of my flash needs
but still considering this as a walk around flash
any thoughts?

I would also appreciate any input on using the 270Ex as a walkaround fill flash for those vacation pics being that the 580EX II is just too heavy and bulky to carry around. At present I am using the onboard flash and would like to know if this would dramatically improve the outcome.
Thank you.

To those who already own 270EX, appreciate if you could pose some pictures taken using this flash.
I already own 580EX and now looking for a light and handy flash to compliment by 30D.
Thank you.

Don't think many people own it, because the 430ex offers much more versatility and it doesn't cost that much more. The 270 is a perfect flash for a G series camera and maybe a rebel. If you're even remotely serious about light you better at least get a 430

You need to use bounce flash or a diffuser to get nice photos with any flash. Straight on flash just looks bad.
The 270EX only has a Guide Number of 27m. I don't think it will be very useful for bounce flash. Even my 580EX II (Guide Number 58m) sometimes does not have enough power when bouncing under certain conditions.
The 270EX is really a stop gap measure to add a little extra light over the built in flash (GN 13m). If you want to bounce it, plan to use higher ISO and wide open apertures.
