Hi all
Thinking of upgrading my 300d (rebel) to a 20d. My main reasons for changing the 300d are:
Slow startup speed
I want a Better camera build (no one likes plastic)
More frames per second
And better auto focusing.
As it seems that I only get decent sharp pictures when using my 50mm 1.4f or there has to be plenty of light about.
I do use photoshop cs and unsharpmask.
Any comments would be appreciated
Many thanks Steve

There are good reasons for upgrading to a 20D, you have some above, but to me they're not the main ones. Startup speed and general operation speed is a huge improvement, I used a 300D again recently and I couldn't believe how slow it was. Build quality of the 20D is better, but if you drop it it might still break. fps is only really important if you do a lot of sport, you generally get better pictures trusting your instincts I find. Auto focusing - didn't notice any difference. AI servo is a great feature, and the 20D gives you a lot more control - if you understand how to use it.
If you're not getting good images with your current camera/lenses upgrading probably won't help - it's either a fault with camera/lens or a problem with your technqiue. Put it on a tripod and take some shots, if they're not right send all the gear to Canon to be checked.
I upgraded from the 300D to the 20D and it was a great move for me.

Many thanks Tim for the quick reply.
I do use a tripod with the same results

Can you post a sample picture to show us what's going wrong? If it's on a tripod and one lens works fine, then it could be the lenses that need calibrating, but i'd send the body in too just to be sure.

I use a 20D as primary but recently picked up a 300D because it's a great travel alternative (lighter, wouldn't feel as bad if it were stolen, etc.) and discounted because of the new XT. In an upcoming China trip, we are leaving the 20D at home. I noticed the 300D makes some assumptions that are quite intuitive (metering mainly)...but the 20D will give you more control over things. All those attributes of the 20D you mentioned will indeed be appreciated. Keep both bodies if you can afford it.

Is China not a good place to take the 20d? I had a 20D stolen on a plane out from Las Vegas to NYC. Home insurance covered it. I am returning to Las Vegas and somewhat feel that I should take the A70 and limit myself to that. But on the other hand why not travel with what you like to use?
I traveled for years with 2 Konica bodies and various lenses and never thought twice about it. Now it seems like I question the destination and its worthiness to the camera.

There are some members in China who should be able to help with that question. Personally I don't know if I could be bothered dragging much gear around when i'm travelling, but on the other hand i'm sure i'd be dissapointed with the results from my old A70.

I would love to bring the 20D to China, but we have some weight limitations...and my wife wants to shoot a 'light' DSLR, so the dRebel was the compromise. I realized that with my lenses, there isn't much of a savings in weight. But I hear you in when you say why not travel with what you like...the dRebel takes some getting used to. My primary will be a Mamiya 6 Rangefinder (3 fixed lenses) and separate lightmeter...so you can imagine it all adds up.

I debated the switch for a long time for all the same reasons you are listing.....the results I saw out of the XT compared to the 300D pushed me over the edge...I am getting my 20D next week. I am confident I won't regret it and I am sure you won't either.

Please don't ask this kind of question because it will upset other members from China. I am not not Chinese, and not from China. Any place can be a bad place if you don't watch or keep your stuff with you nowadays.
