Has anyone heard of using a piece of black silk as a filter to lessen facial lines on portraits?

Can anyone explain how it is done?

What methods/techniques/filters are the best for taking a few years off a subject's face?

Such was a common technique in the days of film. Today, much of it is done post capture via software.

If you must soften the image in camera, there is no shortage of selection of soft filters which can be used. Some pre-made soft filters from companies such as Lee, B+W, Hoya, Heliopan, Tiffen, etc will do a nice job. Many types are available as well. A black silk(rather nylon stocking), mylar sheet, anything transparent with some diffusion will do a nice job, too.

Much luck!
