I am doing a photo spread for a national firearms magazine. These are a sample of the photos I am about to submit to the editor. I have many variations of all the photos but these are the general shots I was able to get. I also have action photos of him shooting a match which have already been submitted (which got me the job to do the rest of the spread).

#1 is for the cover.

Please C&C before I send them off! I inserted the low res samples here, but I promise all the photos are tack sharp. :)

You left enough room at the top of # 1 to allow for a logo or banner, which is good. On the other hand several of the shots also have a lot of space above the heads of your subjects, which is not so good, but an editor will certainly fix that. As a rule, you use two or three shots as potential covers and everything else should be as tightly framed as possible. have a good mix of verticals and horizontals, as you appear to be doing.

I'd have preferred a little more creativity in angles. My personal rule of thumb in shooting is climb high and go low when possible. Sometimes you get a view unlike any other. I've done shots on the range of rifle and pistol shooters using high-speed to capture ejected shells--better to use a medium tele for that--nothing like having a hot shell ding your lens.

The paint on the cross is really distracting in the first pic. For a cover photo the perfect tie and the shabby cross don't combine well. Could it be fixed with a little PP?

The current standards of professional news photographers prohibit such an edit. In any event, the condition of the cross, the simplicity of the inside of the church, the obvious small number of churchgoers depicted, tell their own story.

For their purpose, I think they're well done.

1, 2, and 4 seem unlevel. Was this intended? 5 and 6 also. However, they're okay from a stylistic point of view. The red/white striped part of the tie looks wrinkled in my monitor. Or is there a print on it? If so, this will probably fix up in the better resolution shots.

I thought you guys would like to see how they were used in the magazine. The last one of him eating is the only one I am not really happy with. I gave them lots of pictures of him shooting in a match but they didn't use any of those for some reason.

5&6 the ceiling diffuser right behind his head and face is a little bothersome - can be cloned out easily, I s'pose.

What ever the bitching comments, you're the person in print. My only concern is whether you've breached the magazine's copyright by reproducing their editorial content. If it were me, I'd edit the images to obscure the text and advise forum members to buy the mag for the full story.

You have a good point. I will obscure the text.

The shadow on her face in shot #3 is distracting me. Can fix it in post processing.

It's great to see something come together like this. Nice job. Really curious what lens you used for #1.

#1 was with the 70-200 2.8L IS @ 78mm F4 1/60th. I don't remember which strobe I was using.

The rest were a mix of 35L and the 24mm TS-E. I used the TS-E more for experimental purposes (I had just got it).

I was seeing the 3D aspect of the subject against the backdrop and was wondering what produced that. Looks great, nice definition of the subject.
