I was wondering if I had a 6g card, how many photos will it hold, in either JPG or RAW? Just trying to plan for my trip to Australia.

Thanks in advance!

Mine stores about 105 RAW files per gigabyte. That is RAW only, and it varies somewhat with the ISO setting. For JPEG, you will get a few times more, but that varies tremendously with the type of JPEG file.

Can you get 6GB cards, and can a 20D use them? I get about the same as Bob, like he says depending on ISO. JPG I get about double the number of RAW files.

For my 1gb card I get:

Raw: 110
JPEG L/fine: 265

These are just averages, like said, the file sizes change based on many factors, but those numbers are pretty accurate.

I would start thinking of a photo storage viewer, some come with a 40 gig hard drive in them, you can take all the pic you want.

Photo storage viewer are very volatile. Go for a CD-r Ext drive w/ built in CF Reader. Make sure it can span cross multiple disc. This much more inexpensive way to store the files. I would also recommend to use multiple CF's then to bring just one. Just incase one fail, you would be out of luck.

Just to chime in here: you might want to re-consider getting one gigantic memory card. If you lose it, or it gets corrupted, you've lost a lot of data.

I know a lot of people say that 1GB is the highest they'll go, a few more who will tread into 2GB territory. I don't think it's a mistake, but personally, I wouldn't go higher than that. Photos are the most important possessions in my life, and losing them due to loss or data corruption would ruin my whole day.

Personally, I stick with two 512 cards (80x), a 256, a 128 and the 32 that came with the camera. If I were traveling, I'd probably get a couple more 512s or a single 1gb, depending on how long I was going to be away.

Hope this helps--mine was more opinions about how big your card should be than an answer to your original question...

yours,

Julian

You will need sub 700MB cards, i.e. 512MB if you use one of these. I can get 110-120 Fine JPG's on a 512MB card.

As for the portable storage, I have an X's Drive II which is great for travelling, it has a 30GB drive in it, but still suffers from the 'eggs in one basket' thing that a single 6GB MD does.

Thanks, all. My friend got the card for her camera, and she likes it. We were talking about an IPOD for photos only, to make sure that the data isn't corrupted and lost if the card is, and we will be there approximately 2 weeks. We're thinking about getting a few additional cards, as well...

Now, the next question is how do these things do with the xray machines? Should be no problem, but does anyone know that for sure?

Thanks again. I love this site; such great people willing to share good information!
