I came across this earlier today and it is going to be great.

The Photographer's Ephemeris (http://stephentrainor.com/tools)

It's is free software that uses Google maps and will draw lines on the map showing where Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, Moonset will occur for any location and date. This is great for when I want to get photos of the sun setting behind the Golden Gate Bridge, it will show me where I need to be and what time of year to have the sun be exactly where I want it to be in my photo.

I'm having a lot of fun playing with it and have already started a photo calendar of places I need to go on a certain date.

Yeah, thanks a lot. I've already utilized this software recently to catch sunrise between two offshore islands, and moonrise over another island.

I highly recommend this to anyone who is serious about landscape photography (well, that and a compass).

Great find! Thanks!!

For years I've been scouting locations with the trusty tables and compass.

You know what would be neat - if it also worked with Street View. That way you could not only get the birdseye view, but from street view foreground / background, etc. objects for your composition.

That's a slick program. So much easier than looking up the info & plotting on a map. Wish it ran on a smart phone.

Excellent find! Just curious as to what the distance (in brackets) means after a location name?

I think it's the distance to the nearest place name

I believe the author is working on an iPhone version...

I was a trained navigator in the Navy and have been using the tables and a compass for years. This makes it so much simpler.

You can get an approximation of Street View by watching where the pointer on the little man is pointing...

I've been using this program for quite awhile now and it is very handy! (someone on POTN showed it to me a year or two ago)

As I already stated above, great app and useful, but...

... everybody should be aware that all Adobe Air apps pose security risks (http://weblog.mrinalwadhwa.com/2008/07/21/security-warning-be-careful-when-you-install-adobe-air-applications/).

This is AWESOME! Years ago I made a small effort to create something just like this! I'm probably going to donate a little. I'd love to see the author make this some sort of "plug-in" for google earth so that the view could be tilted so you could kind of "see" what it would be like if you were standing there. In AK there are a bunch of high steep peaks...

Love this software!

that's the distance of the alternate marker the grey one

Are you sure? I thought that distance was the distance from the Marker to the nearest identified landmark?

For instance if my marker is near New York, NY, the distance value would be how far the marker is from the actual label of New York, NY on the map.

I could be wrong though.

The iPhone version is out now:

Also, they say an Android version will be out by the end of the year.

It's the distance from your chosen centroid to the nearest identifiable landmark.

It seems to have a thing for Trailer Parks though...

Great program! It has proven to be extremely valuable for my upcoming vacation. I can plan exactly where I need to be for the best sunrise and sunset shots. Now if it could only control the weather everything would be perfect.
