I would guess it is a memory issue.... but I sure would like to find a fix outside of re-booting my computer...

Every once and awhile when I get on toward processing my 5 or 6th file in Photoshop I find I can no longer use the dodge and burn tools nor can I paint anymore. I can select everything and the actions I take even show in the history palate but nothing changes on the image, no paint is actually layed... a bit puzzling....

the rest of the tools and actions I use in my workflow seem ok and I can go on working on files as long as i don't need painting or d&B. Unfortunately I often rely heavily on the D&B tools for eyes and teeth and paintbrush to work on layer masks.

Anyone know of a good fix for this?

Some more details might be helpful:

What spec is your computer? (processor, RAM, HDD's and OS).
What size files are you working with, and are they JPEG, TIFF, or PSD?
How many are you working on at Once?
Is CS4 updated with all current updates?

What happens if you press "F" to change screen mode (& force a redraw)?

Have you set "Enable Open GL Drawing" in the prefs? If so: Try disabling that.

Thanks René but neither pressing f had any effect and open gl is off, my understanding is I need vista for that option anyway.

Also the clone and stamp tool doesn't work....

Sadly re-booting does seem to work.... hell of a thing though re-booting every 6 images or so...

Moppie here is a screenshot of my system...

CS4 is up to date

I am working with large files 12-20 megabites. sraw from the 5d mkII. the psd files get to around 250mb...

I use bridge to open to ACR then open in PS. I only have one file at a time open in ACR or PS.

Did the problem start around the same time you got the 5D MKII?

nope I was an issue with the 40D as well....

If I convert to 8bit flatten all layers and resize to 800pixels I do get the functions back!

:lol::lol::lol:

The problem is a very simple one.
Your using a computer that was pretty average spec when it was new; 6 years ago.
The 40D, let alone the 5D MKII, did not even exist as concepts 6 years ago.

You need to update your computer to something that can match the performance of your camera.
That means a Quad Core desktop if you want something that will run perfectly.

I've run into this same issue even with a more healthy system..
Usually the only side effect I see is the cursor physically disappears, but I've also had filters that "run" and then have zero effect on the image when done "running"..

IN PSCS there are preferences you can alter that reduce the apps footprint in RAM significantly. Try reducing history and cache levels...

My old AMD 2600 used to do the same thing, and that was just editing 30D files.
It even did it once trying to open lots of files from my old A80 at once.
