I am taking pictures of my kids for their first birthday. I have my own 430 EX II and my buddy lent me his 550 EX.

My plan was to mount the 550 on a tripod left and the 430 on a tripod right.

Would I just need a cable to connect to my camera to trigger the 550 which would then, using the IR, trigger the 430?

I plan on buying the cactus or cyber synch remotes in the future but they would never get here on time anyway.

You will need the Canon off-camera-shoe-cord (or the ebay equalivent) as the "cable". Just make sure you position the front of the slave so that it's sees the flash from the master.

Check out FlashZebra for extended off camera shoe ETTL cords - That will get that 550 of camera to command that 430 on the other side. This is what I do when I want both of my flashes off camera.
