Hi all,
First post here. I have a canon sd630 P&S and now I want to upgrade to a canon SX10 IS.
I have always wanted a DSLR but think it might be an overkill for me. So the next best thing to a DSLR is the Superzoom cameras, and recently I took some pictures of birthday pictures of my nephew with a canon S5 and really loved how the camera feels and I started my research and made up mind on the SX10 (waiting to get a good deal).
Now I want to learn more about controls and capabilities of this camera. I learn best by looking people do it and then replicating it. So is there any website where there are video tutorials on Photography techniques, basics, tricks etc.
I did a google search and found only a few videos. If anyone has any knowledge of where I can find video tutorial for photography it would be great.
Once I have my camera I am sure I will have a lot of questions to ask and hopefully you the experts will help me.
Thanks

Personally. I think you're doing way more than you have to, and turning what should be fun, into work! Why not just buy the camera, use the simple modes to begin with for some great pictures, then learn the creative settings as you go along. You don't need a degree to get good photos with the SX10. Just my opinion.;)

You might want to start at the Canon Learning Station (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=MultiMiscPageAct&key=Learning_Station&fcategoryid=2533).

Thanks guys, that was a very quick response. Also I appreciate the comment about just getting the camera and start taking pictures. I agree with that statement, but at the same time I don't want to click pictures and look and it and be dissatisfied, it will not be the fault of the camera, but my lack of knowledge and to avoid that I want to learn at least some basic things.

I would highly recommend reading the book "Understanding Exposure" (revised edition) by Bryan Peterson. An easy to understand, and highly informative book which based on your aims should suit your needs with regards to learning new skills and progressing your photography!!
Link here: (amazon wont work for me right now - you can get the ISBN from here :))

Thats all I did 369. I bought my sx10 back in november coming from a 5.1mp coolpix. I started doing the default modes and slowly started working my way to the semi- manual and manual modes. Its good fun to get out there and try different things.

Hi guys,
Just when I thought I was all set, I am almost thinking of getting a DSLR. Maybe I don't know, but the pics that I saw here taken from the sx10 don't look professional. I mean no offense to anyone, but I saw the 450d/xsi thread and there is a big difference.
I don't know whether its due to post processing or just cause its a dslr.
Another thing that I am thinking that although the Sx10 has a 20x zoom but would that not compromise on the quality.
Please advise, your inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Rebel XS with it's kit lens is not that far IMO from the price range of the SX10.
[Refurbished Rebel XS with kit lens is for 470$ (http://www.adorama.com/ICADRXSKBR.html)]
And yes it is a huge step in terms of image quality and the camera usability from Canon most sophisticated P&S to the entry level DSLR.
Adding another 200$ towards the nifty-two-fifty (EF-S 55-250 IS lens), and you have the great zoom range you got with the SX10.

go for a dslr because i'm sure you'll be complaining about indoor shots of sx10is cuz non dslr cameras have terrible low light performance, you have to use them at base iso settings as long as you want clear and sharp photos.
