I want to start using a CPL polarizing filter on my 70-200 2.8 (77mm filter size) for outdoor sports, portraits, landscapes, etc.

Is there any way to use that same CPL with my other lenses, particularly the 17-50mm (67mm filter size) ?

get a step down adapter. They are a few bucks but a whole lot cheaper than another CPL.

"step-up" and "step-down" rings are available to fit just about any size filter on just about size lens. No need to get anything with a brand name, just order a cheap one on ebay.

I got a CPL to fit my largest diameter lens, and have step-downs to fit it to all the rest. Works great!

I'm trying to understand how this works. Can someone post a photo of the adapter with a big filter (say 72 or 77mm) on a smaller lens (58, 62mm). How many adapters do you need - one for every size lens? Can you actually use a filter as big as 77mm on a lens as small as 58mm?

Thanks, and sorry for the noob question...

yes but obviously you can't use the hood when using a larger CPL on a lens with a smaller filter diameter.

my landscapes lense are three different diameters -- 82mm, 77mm and 67mm. i have an 82mm CPL and step down rings. i'll probably also pick up a 77mm CPL since i use the 24-70L the most for landscapes.

Thanks Ed I hadn't considered the hood.
I'd like to be able to use my tamron 17-50 with this step-up adapter to 77mm (http://www.adorama.com/FLU6777.html) and a CPL filter, and a hood. Could I just use another lens' hood (like this hood (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EW-83J-Lens-Hood-17-55mm/dp/B000F7GYRQ) for the canon 17-50 2.8 ) which has a 77mm filter size?

You can attach any hood you want with a little creativity and some duct tape, but Canon hoods don't attach to the filter threads.

dang, what about aftermarket hoods?
Also, isn't it important to get the correct-sized hood to avoid vignetting?

you can get a screw-in aftermarket hood and yes if it's too big it'll vignette.
