Well, the SX1 offers a CMOS sensor, which performs somewhat better, and RAW image processing, which is more work, but allows somewhat better results in marginal conditions. It's also faster, if you want to shoot in Continuous mode. Neither will offer any striking advantages over your S5 in macro, though. On the whole, if you just want to take pictures of birds, and don't want to fuss with processing the images, I'd suggest the SX10. If you want to really extend yourself, go for the SX1.

You get RAW and HD video on the SX1, but it costs an extra $200 and takes slightly worse pictures. I'd get the SX10 out of the two (Well, really if I was spending that much I would get a 1000D). But to be honest, I would just keep your S5. There really is nothing major that the SX10 add except a little lens range which you probably will barely notice.

The S5 is a fine camera for sure. In fact it has a faster lens than the SX10. However, if the OP is shooting birds, I think the extra reach of the SX10 will be noticed a great deal, and much appreciated.

Perhaps. There is about 30% more reach on the SX10.

In 35MM terms, which we all seem to still go by, I believe the S5 is equiv to 430 MM compared to the Sx10's 560mm. Of course, he could always get a teleconverter for the S5, and get a 630MM reach, which I've found to work very well. But then there's a matter of putting it on and taking it off.

I know, I just don't think 400 to 500mm is as much as many would think. You still have to get pretty close to a small bird either way to fill the frame. As far as the teleconverter adapters, many tests have shown to lose to simply cropping your existing image.

The one I have is Canon, but other companies make them. Raynox seems to have a good name. Some are okay, others are junk. Watch out for ebay! Remember, you will need a adapter to be able to screw the teleconverter on to your S5.

Converter and Teleconverter can also be purchased at Lensmate.

You can't use a teleconverter on the SX10. You can get a filter adapter for it from Lensmate, but it won't support the weight of a conversion lens.
