Well, I did it. I ordered my first L lens, the 70-200 F/4 L. When it comes, I will have a kit lens and the L lens--what a combo, huh??! I had to sell a lot of my old stuff to be able to afford this so it sure hasn't come easy. I'd also like to get the nifty fifty but I thought the L was more important to get first since the price could go up any time.

I'm hoping I don't have the back focus problem with the lens I get. Anyway, once I get it and it appears to work ok, I'd like to post some photos here just for the heck of it--even if they aren't masterpieces. Hope that's okay.

I'll be getting back to you in about a week! Can't wait!

I sooo understand the way you feel. I went through the same thing, did the same thing and my new 70-200 F/4 L was delivered last night. I think the 70-200 and the kit lens are a pretty good beginners combo (or at least I hope they will be, I haven't had much of a chance to do any shooting with the new lens).

Congrats, I hope you will be as happy with yours!

That's awesome. I'm sure you'll love that lens! I wanted to get one too, but it just doesn't have the reach I need for nature photography. Too bad it's not a 70-300mm f/4L lens. :-) Well, can't wait to see the pics you post taken with your new lens. Enjoy it!

Well my friend, you have started down the same slippery road that I did 1 year ago!! I started with the DRebel and kit lens, bought a 70-200F4 L from Drisley, sold it 5 months later and moved on to a 70-200F2.8 L; in the meantime, sold DRebel and acquired a Canon 1D; got L fever and bought a 135 F2 L; traded that for the 1D. Bought a 50F1.8 II (everyone says have one!); just sold that today because I bought a 50F1.4; bought a 100 f2.8 Macro USM, 1.4 Extender (for the 200F2.8), bought a Zeiss 135 F3.5 (Canon mount), bought a 85 F1.8, and I think that is it for now!! Whew..........it's been a fun and interesting year considering that I had a G1 last May!! Good luck with your new lens............

Dennis ,mate ,there is now NO WAAAAY you'll be satisfied with the kit lens when you compare the images to the L lens:D :D

It's a dillema.Does one feel sorry for the inevitable future financial strain you will endure or feel happy that you at last have a great lens;)

You bet, Dan! I garage-sold my computer desk, 6-string epiphone, sprinkler system, Halle Berry signatured shirt...... to collect $$$ for the lens. Geees....I'm worse than a drug addict!

Congrats, guitarman3! Can't wait for your wonderful images, to convince me to sell my LOTR Trilogy Platinum DVD Set autographed by Ian McKellen. :p Just j/k.

Congratulations! I know you will love it!

I've had my 17-40 f/L and 70-20 f/4L for about two weeks and love them both! Especially the 17-40! Now I can't sleep wishing for more!

Enjoy!

It's good to see I'm not the only one with L lens fever! I'm sure it'll be a long time before I get another one so I'm going to make the best of this one. Yeah, that 17-40L is looking good too but I'll have to think of other stuff to sell. I mentioned to my family the idea of selling my Gretsch Nashville guitar (1965 vintage) and they weren't real happy with the idea. So it's still in the closet.

Anyway, I'm excited about the 70-200. I kinda wanted a 300 mm reach but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get an L for a price I could 'afford'. I know I couldn't afford a 300mm L so I had to go with the 200. I also believe that if the time came when I wanted an upgrade, I could likely get most of what I paid upon selling this lens.

Thanks for the good thoughts on my choice and I can't wait to post some photos.

I feel like I'm in a good club here. After much salivating I, too, ordered an EF 70-200 f/4 L just last Friday (my "first L") in anticipation of taking it with me on vacation in a couple weeks. It arrived late Monday afternoon and I went right out the next day after work and experimented with it. Of course I felt like such a geek (lol) walking around the local college campus with what, so far, is the longest length lens I've ever used, but it handled beautifully. Shot all RAW, and was very pleased with just my initial test shots. I can already see that if I shoot around in the f/8-f/11 range, I'm going to get some incredible shots. Of course one thing I have to get used to is hand-holding something heavier and longer than I'm normally used to, especially if I start to approach the 1/60 shutter speed threshhold, but I guess that's all part of learning to use something new. Unfortunately, dusk was setlling in before I could fill up my CF card with too many shots, but I plan to really take it out for a good test spin this weekend. Just trying to decide where I can go to really put it through its paces......

Best of luck on your f/4 guitarman3!

Hey NJPhotoguy,

It's great to see the lens is working good for you. Makes me even more anxious to try it myself!

Medic1,
This may be a question with an obvious answer but are most of the aircraft photos taken with the 70-200? I couldn't find the photo details on your site. Thanks
Great photos by the way!!

You can add the 1.4 TC. That'll give u a length close to 300mm. That's what good about L lens.

The 70-200 is a good lens. How good, will depend on what you have been using before.
I came from a 85mm 1.8 prime, so wasn't blown away by the quality when I got mine.

It also is not a replacement for talent! An interesting, well exposed and focussed shot will be great with any lens. A bad shot will not be better by using an L lens.

I do think that expectations for this lens may be out of proportion and some people may be disappointed. I prefer to be surprised at the quality, rather than expect perfection and feel let down.

After all, it's only glass!
