This seagull stood quiet on a post for me as I came very close to take these pictures with my standard 18-55mm

The funny thing is they look pretty sharp at full resolution but when I reduce them to make them a small file they loose a bit of sharpness, what can I do about that???

Are you constraining the image proportions of the original image?

Hmm theoretically that should result in the same proportions...what program are you using to do this?

If you make sure "Lock Aspect Ratio" is checked, then that should help.
Otherwise i can't think if what else you could try.

It has happened to me all the time that i have to reduce them to under a 100kb, the originals are between 2 and 3 MB and look so much better.
Should I try another program???

I found the lock aspect ratio and it was not ticked, I will try that next time, thanks for the advise

Very nice color. I like the position of the bird in #2 but don't care for the horizon going thru his head.
They are pretty things for being so nasty. Sea pigeons.

I typically run USM in PSP8 on resized photo's to bring back the sharpness lost in the downconversion process. Nice photo's BTW :)

Great shots well composed, IMO a wider opening would have softened the background more and provided the bird more impact in the picture.
Usually I sharpen an image as a last step. I leave the original untouched and then prepare a copy for printing or a copy for the internet and process each one separately. I use the High Pass Filter for initial sharpening and a touch up with the Unsharp Mask. If the image came from my 20D I use Miranda's 20D CPro for sharpening - its hard to beat, he recommends sharpening before downsizing however.
Look forward to seeing more of you images

Fantastic shots! Especially for the lens used! Great job. I love the second one. The way the sea gull is looking up at the sky. It's cute.
