Im headed to my first airshow (with a camera) this weekend and I need some advice. Would you reccomend I stick with my 300 prime or use my 70-200 with a 1.4x. Im speaking about the portion in the air.

I learned alot in these forums already about shutter speed and other tidbits but this is one question that I still have.

This may be a silly question, Im not sure. Maybe Im not asking the right question. Any tips you can think of are appreciated.

The air show is in Battle Creek Michigan

I'd use the prime until I saw how far away they were going to be. The TC should be good on that, too.

No. I don't plan to officially go to the TOM one, either. I'm going to try to shoot from the road this year to get some different angles.

Sticking the 1.4X on either the 300 or the 70-200 is going to make your AF iffy at best with the 40D. The 40D needs f5.6 or wider to properly auto-focus and that's what you'll have at the bottom end with the 1.4 attached.

I have no problems with a 2X in the 70-200 f/2.8 in good light with my 20D.

EDIT: As I understand it, the XXD series cameras need f5.6 to properly auto-focus. The OP shows a 70-200 f4 IS and a 300 f4 in his signature. He could probably maintain AF with the 1.4X on either lens, but he would be constrained from adding a CPL to the combination and AF would be likely to suffer a bit in the late afternoon.

I also have the 70-200 f2.8 IS and it focuses just fine with either extender in good light. I've never used the 2X on it in marginal light so I don't know how it would function under those conditions.

That shouldn't effect the AF, anymore than low light should, assuming that there's enough contrast in the subject for the AF to lock onto?

'Cuz the polarizer will cause him to lose another stop of light and that will put him outside the aperture range for accurate AF. If he starts with an f4 lens, adds a 1.4X, he's now at f5.6. Slap on a polarizer and now he's at an equivalent f8. The XXD series cameras will not reliably focus at f8.

Slap on a polarizer and now he's at an equivalent f8. I'm sure that that makes sense to you right now, but if you think about it a bit, you'll realize that adding a CP to the outside of the lens is no different that shooting when it's two stops darker outside. So... no difference in the effective f-stop of the lens/TC combination. ;)

Whatever... :D It's probably a moot point because the OP has attended his airshow by now.
