I do not have a macro lens (yet!), this was taken with my 90-300 @245mm (Exif available in the image)
Not a great shot, but I kinda like it.
Comments welcome as usual.
Edited to add: no postprocessing except for a little USM.

Just lucky... actually its not black but very dark green (6/16/5 in RGB). As a matter of fact, the flower was in full sunshine while the background was in full shadow (today was a really strange cludy/sunny day, I just underexposed about 1 stop and this is the result. I like it :D

:)
it's a very beautiful shot of the rose
the surroundings are fine . perfect in your shot
it's the greenfly eating away at the bush I would be worried about
maybe needs to be sprayed with a little washing up liquid mixed in luke warm water

Well, I actually took the shot in our Botanical garden. I have to say that looking closer a these flowers, I told the manteinance guys that there was a problem. I do not know if they actually did something about it. I will check that out nex time, I am planning to go another time with better weather conditions so I can F/stop a little more, at least until I get a macro lens.

ok, thanks
(about the gardens)
not sure the macro would take in the whole shot like you did here, which is beautiful
it will be a different composition then. just as lovely but different.
more closeness on the rose itself
that's why this one was kindof special, in it's own way
really lovely

Well, since you liked it, here's another one. Different flower, same lens, different light conditions and a little of touch up from the original raw file. Here there IS some postprocessing.
