View Full Version : First wedding (for the morning anyway)

The photographer who was supposed to shoot my friend's wedding morning backed out at the last moment. Feeling really bad about it, I decided to shoot it for free - my first time shooting seriously!

Keeping with good etiquette, I let the paid guy have the best angles and stayed far out of his way for the ceremony (even though he was a jerk to a bunch of people - including the bride and groom).

Please give me some honest critique and feedback. Thanks.

I think you did great for your first wedding! Kinda hard to comment on the vid though, you'd get a lot more C7C if you post actual images here...

PS Are you from Calgary btw? Was the wedding at Bonavista Lake? Just looked familiar... :)

Great advice. I will upload some photos when I get home tonight.

I am indeed from Calgary, and it was at Chaparral. :)
I don't think that I would ever want to be a full time wedding photog (too much stress), but it is a great place to practice.

I love your blog - consider it bookmarked.

I liked a lot of your outdoors shots... the ones where the bride was getting ready seemed to lack some interesting angles... Some of the different PP styles were very nice. I too would like to see some shots posted here to comment on specifically...

I think you did one hell of a good job though, and a rarity to step up like that for others. Wonder if you might share a few thoughts on anything you learned?

Images up. They look a bit soft once they get onto photobucket. I wonder if I have to over-sharpen them next time?

I'm confused about the "pro". I thought you said he backed out at the last minute and you did it instead. But you keep talking about a pro being there and staying out of his way.

Ditto.

Awesome work anyway, love your PP and love your signature.

Sorry for the confusion. There was one unpaid photographer who was supposed to shoot the morning (bride getting ready) and the pro who shot the ceremony and formals. I replaced the unpaid person in the morning who backed out and was invited to stay for the ceremony. I suck at English. :(

Oh...video to be posted back up in a few mins and the email address does work. Please don't spam me. :(

Ah, that makes sense. And your english is fine. I went back and reread what you wrote, and nothing made me think it wasn't your first language.

Hey all...wow, I didn't expect this bump. :)

I have to go back to the psd files to see what I did with each one (and hope that I didn't merge the layers). :-s

Thanks for the comments. Work (the-job-that-puts-food-in-my-mouth) is preventing me from shooting too much, bummer, but I hope to be able to be good enough to charge some money in the next year.

An abstract photo from another wedding that I was a guest of last year.

And a bagel for your thoughts.

I actually really like how the PP came out although my I find it a little heavy on the blurring (like #2 and #6). Can you breakdown what you did to achieve this PP effect (especially #2 and #5)? As someone said earlier maybe you lacked some interesting angles and I agree with that. Even though I am not 100% familiar what went down during the morning session I am surprised you chose these 6 photos to post. The reason I say this is that none of these 6 photos showcased an important part of the actual wedding (exchanging rings, first kiss, throwing of the bouquet etc) . Are you just holding back the good stuff on us? Haha.

Outside of that...good job!
