One of the posters at the dpreview forum conducted a very thorough test of the Canon Powershot G1 autofocus and succeeded in mapping out the focus zone that autofocus uses. In case you haven't found this yet, see here for his results and method:

Thanks for the link. This certainly helps in understanding the undefined focus zone of the G1.
