alright people i searched the threads and haven't found anyone with the problem im experiencing.

im shooting with a 1ds II, and the 580exII.

the flash is firing at FULL power when it is in ETTL, and blowing out the whole picture. it does this in low light, and regular light conditions.

i shoot with it pointing up when im holding the came in portrait, and i notice it blows up the picture when it doesnt display the aperture reading on the back pannel.

this is really weird. it doesnt do this every shot, its unpredictable.im shooting and everything seemes fine, and the aperture is displayed on the back, and it fires off the correct amount of light. and any next random shot, it will stop displaying the apperture value on the back of the flash, and again it fires off at FULL power.

it sometimes does this when the flash is pointed straight forward, and this time it wont display the correct focal length and again, fire off at full power.

i dont know what it is, its really frustrating though. my 430ex II never did this.

i dont know if its the camera, or the flash, or a setting?

everything is at 0, no c.F. has been changed.

im stumped.

please if this has happened to anyone share you insight..

or if you know what is causing this.

thanks a lot,

-Dan

I suspect that you have a poor connection between the flash and the hotshoe. Make sure that the flash is fully inserted into the hotshoe. Check the little pins in the hotshoe and make sure that they are not sticking.

I had a problem where my 580EXII wouldn't flash everytime randomly. Turns out the for the hotshoe connector inside the flash were causing intermittent connectivity issues. I noticed that if I slide the flash into the hotshoe, but didn't lock completely, I no longer had issues. I wonder if your hotshoe on your flash needs a little tightening as well.
