well im happy to report my first L experience was everything I was hoping for.
The build etc etc etc is excellent.
I decided since im really happy with my 50mm 1.4 to not get the 85mm 1.8 but hold out and re-approach the wife on getting the 70-200 2.8L
Do you guys think its worth waiting on or should I go for the 85 now. I have this new lens(17-40) to keep me busy- and once I negotiate through the proper wife channels I may only have to wait a month or two on the 70-200mm. Plus now I have L fever!
thanks

I am sure there is some sort of wise crack about the wife there somewhere, but I shall resist!
Another perspective on the 70-200f2.8. I have the 70-200f4 and 85mm 1.8 and find this a good combination. I use the zoom outside in good light and the 85 when light is low. The f4 zoom is also rather smaller and lighter than the f2.8 zoom.
You can buy both these for less money than the f2.8 zoom (and they can be bought at intervals and become much more 'wife friendly').
It obviously depends on what and how you intend to shoot with it. I would also like the 135mm f2 prime, but it's an expensive lens and out of my reach financially, or you could get the 200 prime which is also considered pretty good and not quite as expensive.
Hope it hasn't made the decision even harder.

You will really see what a "L" is all about with the 70-200 2.8! I have the 17-40, 24-70 2.8, & and the 70-200 2.8, and I can tell you that you will dig the 70-200. I have the non IS, and have never wished I had the IS.
Well actually I "had" the 17-40........traded it on the 10-22, and not to bum you out but I'm glad I did. I love that 10-22! Yes I was hard to give up a L for a non L, but I can honestly say I'm glad I did.

I was considering the 10-22, which will be a prospect in the future- from what I have seen on the board its great lens. I could understand having the 24-70 why not trade the 17-40 for a wider lens especially if you deal with the crop factor.
I think i would rather the faster 70-200 and skip the 85 for now- I really like my 50 1.4 and with the 1.6 crop having the 85 seems like I would have to stand back to much for my shooting style.
Im a low light guy- having the 17-40 is going to be a problem in time im sure, but for budget reasons it works for now.
thanks for the input.

The purchase of the 85mm f/1.8 remains the single best decision I've made with regard to photography, bar none...

The 85 is a great lens. I have a number of lenses including the 70-200 but the two that make it into my bag and onto my camera for 95% of my photos are the 17-40 and 85.

Maybe I will rethink- Do you use it more than say the 50mm? I felt maybe the lens was to close for a prime and would limit my shots.
IMO I prefer the primes for the low light capabilities and also how sharp they are.

Honestly? I probably take just as many shots with the 50mm as I do the 85mm. Image quality with the 85mm, I think, is unbeatable for the price...

I would love a 70-200 L of any variety. I must second and third what Steve & Citizensmith say about the 85mm 1.8

the subject of this thread tickles me of one thought:
most of us have to negotiate carefully with our finance minister for new glasses or other gadgets...
I think not all of the forum members are men, right?
So... how are the female photographers doing with their husband, boyfriend, or what so ever when they want to buy a piece of "L" glass for example? Does this "negotiation scheme" only applied to the male photographers?
C'mon ladies... say something and inform us the "victim" of negotiation for our hobby :p

You know what ? This is one of the most interesting questions ever asked. So I add mine to your invitation to our ladies here.

I bet I'm in the minority here, but I think IS is a bit over-rated (IMO of course).
