Was hoping to get some opinions on what to go with?

Why not try the EF-S 10-22 with a 12mm extension tube?

Does the Extension tube allow EF-S glass to be mounted on EF bodies? Hm...

I hate to be so contradictory,. but suggesting somone purchase a $700.00 plus lens that won't fit there camera as an experiment is simply not a good suggestion to offer someone asking for advice :(
The EFS lens won't mount on the 1Ds.. by using an extension tube,.(assuming you get he RIGHT extension tube that will allow an EFS to mount,. not all do)..you lose a large portion of your range of focus... at the long end,... including infinity... making the lens useless for landscapes for the most part,.
And the lens will surely vignette, restricting the useable feild of view, after the crop giving you even less width than far less expensive lenses.
Serious recomendations for a 1Ds would include;
14mmL
16-35mm f/2.8L
17-40mm f/4L
Hope this helps.

I have the Canon 16-35mm L f2.8 and I am very happy with the results on my 1Ds.
So that is my recomendation.

Only Zeiss lens that is worthy is the Distagon 21mm f/2.8
I agree with CDS, bad idea on the Canon EF II extension tube.

There's also a Zeiss Distagon 17 mm (or is it 18 mm??) that is known to be a good alternative.
The Canon 24/1.4L and 35/1.4L are very good on full-frame (the 34/1.4 is known to be top-notch). Based on what I read from people with the 1Ds series, wider than 24 mm is where the difficulty begins. (Note that 24 mm is pretty wide on full-frame).
I'm enjoying experimenting with a Canon 20 mm f/2.8 USM lens, but its on a 1.3X camera so I can't comment on corner performance on full-frame. It's doing quite well on my 1D2 though. The 16-35L has also been a very good performer on the 1.3X, though corners start going south as you get wider than 20 mm.
The Sigma 20mm f/1.8 is another alternative. I loved mine on the 10D, but when I went to the 1.3X sensor, I quickly noticed that it didn't have quite the performance that I had obtained with the tighter crop. Many like this lens though, so I suspect that if you snag a good copy, it would be pretty good on full-frame, at least stopped down a bit.

Maybe a 20mm Flektogon f/2.8. And it's not nearly as expensive as the West Germany Zeiss.
16mm MC Zenitar
20mm Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon f/2.8

I may watch for that 20 mm Flektogon myself, just for experimentation purposes.
Also, forgot to mention the Sigma & Canon 15 mm fisheye lenses. I haven't tried the Sigma, but the Canon is very good and sharp. Word is that the Sigma performs similarly.

Note on 10-22 with 12mm extension tube.
Although I did not get to try it (because I had old version of extension tube), the Canon reps indicated it most likely would not be able focus at all because of the extension tube at all but about maybe 0-3 inches. Not very practical.
Still want to try it for myself, but I suspect they are correct.
Me I recommend the 16-35 for a wide angle zoom. Primes are a different story.

this lens is proven to provide quite sharp images on my 1DmkII so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for a 1Ds MKII....super wide and VERY well corrected (for distortion)
the only negative is that the focus is all over the place and it takes a bit of trail and error to get it right....
have fun...

As CDS says. Forget the Canon 10-22mm. It wont fit on the 1DS.
It's an EF-S only lens.

I use the 16-35 2.8 on the 1DM2 and it is very sharp.

Questions:
How wide?
Prime or zoom?
For what subject?
How fast?
What's your budget?
Then you should be able to find your own answers...
But - Why would you consider anything that is NOT wholly (Canon) EOS-compatible in the first place?
Cheers

you don't need 10mm on a 1Ds.... you're gonna see the back of your head in that picture :D:D:D
even 17mm is wiiiiide on a full frame camera like that.
CDS suggested the 14mm prime. As far as image quality corner to corner I think that would be the winner (L prime)... but the 16-35 or 17-40 won't be too bad either ;)
