Hey Everyone,
I took this while I was out last weekend. I thought the lights from the building looked nice up against the dark blue sky. I'm very new to photography and have been trying to get the hang of shooting in manual mode. Any and all criticisms are welcome because that's the only way I will ever get any better. It was shot at F3.5, 1/6s, ISO 800.

I like it, but what is the light on the steps coming from? Looks like car headlights. Were you able to take any without the headlights? I'd be curious how those turned out.

I love it .. very well done ..
I don't believe headlights were used at all .. just looks like some spots that might have been on.
Or .. the image was vignetted?
But if it was headlights, lmao .. it's still good .. ;)

No headlights, just small lights mounted on the bottom of the handrails. I do agree that the lighting on the steps does tend to take focus away from the building and the sky. If only I had the connections to cut the power and try it without the lights ;).

Thank you Tomi. It's definitely not vignetted;probably because I have no idea what that is haha. Care to explain?

I dig the shot! Do wish the light from the rails was less or nothing, but still nice

You're welcome ! bw!
And vignetteing is what happens to you in college when you first enter, and get raped by 4 gurls. ;)
No wait .. uhh, thats something else .. :p
Below is a sample of an image that I took of my Ally while she was asleep.
Ain't she purrrrdyyy? lol ok where were we?
The edges of the image below were "vignetted" to bring more attention toAlly.

Also to *take out* other unwanted things .. or, whatever .. (lousy explanation)
but here's a true definition from websters .. :D
a picture (as an engraving or photograph) that shades off gradually into the surrounding paper.
(or in this case, a digital image produced in photoshop.)
Some folks like it, some folks don't.
I use it alot with high school seniors, some brides .. or even family portraits ..
"Old School" it is .. the folks that don't like it, I fnd are very young,
and have never used the term "Portraiture" ..
Vignetteing has been around since before cameras were invented ..
Lots of painters would use it ..

Doesn't sound like a bad Saturday night during freshman year ;)
Thanks for the cliff's notes version. I've definitely seen it in pictures before, just didn't know the "fancy" terminology for it.
p.s. It looks like your cat has a very tough life. I've already called animal control to report the abuse.

I personally think that, even with the light on the stairs, the shot works.
The light draws attention to the stairs, the avenue to this place. I'm sure wherever this is would be more than happy to have a print of it somewhere.
