I am looking to get a compact camera to carry around at times when my 5D isn't practical. I bought my girlfriend a Powershot SD870 IS last year and she was very happy with the image quality and the wide angle. Now I'm looking for a P&S for myself, the requirements being a wide-angle lens, very good image quality and compact size.
Regarding image quality - I'm not holding out for any kind of holy grail. Rather, I just want something that's a head above everything else. Years back I had a Sony Cybershot, but the softness and noise/grain levels made it little more than a paperweight to me.
The Powershot SD880 IS looks like a very good choice. Wide angle lens, IS, small size, and many, many people satisfied with its image quality. They're becoming rare, but I can still find one on Amazon.
The Powershot SD960 IS has also caught my interest. Same wide angle lens and compact size plus HD video, but I am worried about the image quality. I've been Googling and reading all afternoon - I've found a great many reviews saying there are "image quality issues" that are not atrocious, but do not meet the bar set by its SD880 predecessor.
Do you have an SD960 IS. Have you used one? What do you think of the images? Are they much worse than the 880? Is the quality acceptable? Does the HD video capability make up for the apparent decrease in image quality?
