Screen says "LENS"

I have seen a G1 for sale for a few (very few) dollars but the seller describes it like this.
"Canon G1 with a fault. You turn it on and the LCD screen says 'LENS' and it doesn't come out as it should so it currently doesn't work. Suspect this could be a blown fuse."

Any ideas on this? What is the likely cause.... I know fuses can be replaced but perhaps it is something more sinister!

Sounds like lens motors that drive lens forward and back are faulty,

You get the same error if you leave the lens cap on and turn the camera on.

Sounds nasty to me .

my Pro1 said the same thing when it got hit by a rugby ball and is being fixed as we speak
