View Full Version : Help setting up my 580ex ii w/ cybersync triggers

hey guys, first of im new to photography and even newer with flash stuff. i recently purchased a 580ex ii and the alienbess transmitter and receiver.
i have attached pictures how its connected and whats displayed in the speedlite.
somehow when i attach it and take a picture, no matter if the flash exposure is set to +3 or -3 or 0, the flash output flashes the same. anyone know the problem? any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the world of manual flash! With the cybersync's you lose your ability to shoot in ETTL..which is where you have your flash set. Change your flash setting to manual and adjust accordingly.

If you want to keep ETTL, you'll have to move to Radio Poppers or the new Pocket Wizards.

It's because your flash is in ETTl mode. In ETTL mode the camera tells the flash what power it needs to fire at. Since the flash is not connected to the camera or an ETTL capable trigger, the flash is just firing at a default level. You need to change your flash to manual output, and then do manual metering and adjust flash output accordingly (do you have a light meter).

If you wanted to retain the ETTL functionality and have the flash compute the output, you need to buy the Canon ST-E2 or the new PocketWizards

Furthermore, your speedlite is set to MASTER mode which is not going to do any good either. And it's set to HSS mode. That is probably not going to be useful either since your light output will be drastically reduced and the CyberSyncs cannot really do much better than 1/320th or 1/250th synching anyways.

when i put it in manual mode, i see can def see the power difference. but it does not sync up with the camera. meaning i test it out using the pilot, and then i try to use the cybersyncs test buttons, they do not fire.

Set your flash to a manual mode, but not manual-master mode. Use one of the other manual modes like manual-slave.

The PC port on the 580EX II is turned off in manual-master mode.
