View Full Version : Should I sell my mint 550 & 420 to buy a 580?

I'm wondering if the benefits of the 580 would warrant selling both my flashes. I rarely use the 420, it's only been used a couple times. The 550 is like new as well.

Just curious to see what those who have upgraded to the 580 think. Camera is a 20D.

I wouldn't want to give up a second flash that can be used as a slave only to end up with a single flash, regardless of how spiffy and new it is. I have both a 550 and a 580, and I like the controls of the 580, but after that, it's a wash for me.

I second what Tom said. I have all 3 flashes and maybe it's just me but I really don't like the dial control of the 580 because it's too hard to turn, I think. Anyway, other than the smaller size of the 580, there really isn't that much more to the 580EX over the 550EX. I'd rather have the 550EX and the 420EX which I can work together in a wireless configuration rather than one 580EX.

Ok thanks guys. I primarily use the flash for weddings where there isn't time to mess with a slave, so I was just curious if the 580ex did a better job of properly exposing the images on the 20D than the 550. I so rarely set up any sort of studio shots that I almost never need the 420. Maybe I'll start using it for bridal portraits.

A multiple flash setup isn't limited to just a studio. A setup like ThomasCanty's would be very appropriate for wedding work, I would imagine.

Well, the 580EX does have a shorter recycling time so that might be very advantageous for your wedding shots, especially if things are moving at a fast pace.
