Havin gotten the Canon 70-200 f/4 a few weeks ago, today was my first opportunity to do some sport shooting with it. I find the tracking of objects coming towards the camera is extremely tricky on the D30, and also it's hard to track a player, the camera would easily loose tracking and get locked onto the background instead... Are all these deficiencies gone if I use the 1D-series camera?

In a nutshell, yes, the D30's AF capabilities are pretty poor, in DSLR terms is pretty much an antique! The new 20D's AF is greatly improved, not far off the 1 series, but the ultimate now is the 1D MkII.
PS. You've got some nice shots there though!

So how does these new AF systems determine which object to track? Do I have to constantly have my subject be covered by the same AF point? My D30 would loose tracking and focus onto one of the other points even though my subject is still in the middle.
