Newbie here. I am going to start doing product shoots for work (server boxes, hard drives, etc) and I am also apprenticing for a wedding photographer. I am wondering what lens I should get, keep in mind that budget is an issue, but I don't want to buy junk either. Here's what I want....

Good range of f/stops with f/1.8 as a minimum
Decent Zoom range
Has to fit the Digital Rebel and 20D
Image stabalization (do I want/need this?)
Quality without too steep a price tag

Can be Canon lens or third party. Now I mainly shoot with a Digtital Rebel and a SpeedLite 580EX, but I will upgrade to a 20D within the next six months.

Thanks!

Welcome to the site :)

Have you read this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752)? Have a read of it, it'll give you a better idea what you want, then you can ask more educated decisions.

another think to keep in mind is that you get what you pay for usually. Don't expect to get L quality for pocket change.

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is what comes to mind.... it's relatively cheap. I don't own one, but I hear good things about it

Again look at the thread Tim has pointed you towards...but your budget is important...

if you need f1.8 then your best best is the 50 or 85mm F1.8 or even the F1.4 in the 50.

Once you have read this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752)then you need to ask the question again.

to shoot products, you can just use your kit lense. it's sharp wide angle. you will be in a controlled enviorment meaning the lights. so you don't need to go down to f/1.8 yuo don't need IS for things not moving and that are that close to you.

so I recomend the kit lense.

For the product shots then the 50mm f1.8 is perfect and inexpensive in the extreme ... you just need to stand closer or farther away from the subject. If you are shooting very small objects or need very close in detail then get a Macro like the Sigma 105 f2.8.

Weddings ... plenty has been written before and it depends on your budget. Without that info. then there are too many permutations to list!
