Anyone use a table top tripod? Is it a waste of time.
Would like it to work with a RebelXT witht th 50mm1.4

Just thought it might be worth keeping in my bag if needed for self portraits with the wife or slow shutters for fun.

If yes any brands worth looking at?

IMO the 5-bucks-tripods are rather ****ty, they're just good to hold a webcam...

I've got the Manfrotto 345 : Table Top Tripod Kit (http://www.manfrotto.com/product/templates/templates.php3?sectionid=85&itemid=781) . I bought it for my G3 two years ago. It's perfect for this. I've used it also with my 20D, it's steady with small and/or light lenses, such as the 18-55 or 28-135. But for longer lenses (telephoto zooms), you'd better get a bigger head, but the base is still good. I've put the 486RC2 on the base, put the 20D with a 75-300 on it, and it works fine...

I haven't tried one of the table top tripods because of the negative things I have read about them. I use a bean bag and it works great.

I've got a small one, too, and not expensive at all but stiff enough though. It's a Hama, but don't ask me its reference.
Was - and still is - useful with my G5, but I use it also with my 20d sometimes. I wouldn't use it with my 70-200/2.8 or the 100-400, but for playing around in very low natural light conditions, self-portraiting, or having fun, this cheapie makes it ;)

They're cheap so worth having around. I rarely use mine but I didn't spend much on it either. I'm probably more likely to have my camera on a decent tripod next to the subject.
