He looks too cute in this shot. Always make sure to keep both hands in the frame. Also, try to avoid using direct flash when possible. The shadow halo around him is due to direct flash. This shot would have looked much better with softer lighting.

I agree with the hands comment. If you do not own a 430 or 580 flash, I highly recommend it.

One tip is to get more on his level get down on your knees even your belly if you have to. I see a missed opportunity, since he is 11 months and definitely mobile, why not get on the other side of the gate, that way he is "trapped" to be in your picture, hopefully you can get him to look at you.

If you don't have those external flashes utilize natural light, it really is the best anyway. Get him by a doorway or a big window and have him face it. Try trapping him in baskets or boxes and practice that way.

Definitely make sure not to chop off his fingers.

+1, one of the things I learned a while ago with my 2 year old is pictures come out a lot better and are more interesting when your camera is eye level to your child. Like any other photography, try different angles you normally wouldn't try, a lot of times the pictures you end up keeping are ones you never thought of when you picked up your camera.
