Hello everyone I'm "MAD DOG" and I'm pretty new to the forum and pretty new to photography.
Currently I have an EOS10D + 28-135 IS USM.
The question is if I go for a longer focal length lense, which should I buy?
Also, I'm missing a wide angle lense, but I think that's probably an easy one to choose...... 17-40L.
I like to shoot a broad spectrum of subjects eg. deer, birds and scenery.
Any advice or suggestions greatfully received.
No I can't afford 100-400L either.

100-300 f/4-5.6 USM is one good choice. It is of similar construction to your 28-135, though it does not have IS.

Tanks Tom W.
I have been reading quite a few threads on the forum before registering and have noted that the 70-200L USM gets quite a good review.
Is the 100-300 a better proposition, or should I consider the 70-200L?

the 70-200L is a better lens. Its also more expensive. Worth it if you've got the money - no question about that. And you can get almost the same focal length with the 1.4X teleconverter.

Tom
Followed your advice and have ordered a 70-200L f4. Will have to get otu there and post a couple of pics in the next week or two.
THANKS

The 70-200 F4 isn't really suited as a wildlife lens in my view. I had one for that same usage and sold it. I had an extender and made little difference, other than at the Zoo ;-) You may nbe Ok with deer too! Otherwise, you'd really need 400mm and longer, esp. for birds. I have a Bigma (50-500mm Sigma) which is a great value lens with masses of potential quality wise.
Even if looking at a 70-200ish range lens I would personally buy the Sigma 2.8 version: not much more money, but performs better in lower light situations, such as forests, or even indoors. Quality at least as good as the Canon F4. I just found it more flexible, tho is heavier and not an ideal walk around lens. The F4 is light enough to carry in a bag with your IS lens on the camera. Will fit nicely with the 17-40 L if you go that route. I'd also get a 50mm 1.8 II prime especially for indoor family and portrait style shots. The IS isn't great indoors. The 50mm costs peanuts but outstanding performer.
Despite my comments, there is no need to regret your purchase for a second as the F4 is a truly great lens to have in your collection and quite flexible ... holds value very well too. Once it arrives you'll love it. It's just not a wildlife lens!
