Jeni - I also wanted to thank you personally, you showed me how to exted the black background on my other twin pictures and I have now been doing that a lot.

And of course thanks Christy for all your help with my photos too.

Could you share what you did with the black background to get it like you did? Thank you.

I use black velvet and my background wasn't actually that big, jeni told me how to extend the canvas size in photoshop and then re-crop it to the size you want.

I'm not near my computer but I think its image, resize, canvas and it will show your actual size and I usually go about 2 inches bigger on width and height then choose black (I don't think it will work well with other colors). Then say ok. After that I choose the crop tool and you choose what size you want to crop to and just crop it. My picture was acually a portrait orientation and I think it looks better landscape. I hope that helps if not maybe someone can give a better explanation since I'm not near photoshop right now.

OMG! These are gorgeous!!!!! You are making me want to do another newborn shoot soon! Beautiful! I love how you used the tutu in a different way. Very cool. I will need to try that the next time I get to shoot a newborn girl.

p.s. wondering how old the baby was when you photographed her?

p.s. wondering how old the baby was when you photographed her?

She was 8 days old, and I had another that was 12 days old and it was hard to get them to sleep I think maybe 5 days would be better.

Thank you you for the comments

Ahhh! Great job!!

I just had my first "practice" shoot with a newborn (she was a friend's baby...10 days old), but she was awake and crying the whole time. It was at the parent's house and the t.v. was on and there was no heater for her or anything...
I gave up after an hour because I felt bad for the poor little thing. I think she just wanted to eat and go to sleep (once we left her alone).

Your photos look really great. I can't believe you are "new" to this!!

p.s. Mom didn't want to take the baby's diaper off, either. She was worried she would pee everywhere. So, even if we got a shot of her not crying - I would have had Elmo in there. How do you explain about how ugly disposable diapers are going to look in the photo?

Stella to prepare the baby I normally tell parents to try to keep the baby up as long as they can before the sessiona and to feed them right before I come. also try to do it as early as possible, this one was 8 days old and still hard to get her to sleep, i'm thinking 5 days old would be better.

As for the diaper thing, maybe you can assure the parents it's ok if they pee on the backdrops and that it is common for them to do so, this little one did, at least it was at the end of the shoot. everything can be washed and it will end up happening. She did go poo too but she did that in Daddy's hands lol.

Here in hawaii we don't have a problem with warmth but if it is cold try keeping the baby wrapped up and covered in between shots, if they are laying naked on a prop cover them with a blanket until you are ready to get the shot.

i hope helps, I'm in no means any where near and expert but have learned off of the 4 newborn shoots I have done so far.

Thank you to everyone with the gracious comments

These are all really great! I also like the idea of extending the background...hadn't really thought much about that one I guess...

As for the diaper thing...there are often parents who do not want to take the diaper off...we actually got one of the coccoons to do newborn pictures in...and it seems to help...plus you can keep the diaper on if they are a little "skiddish" of taking it off...

Again, great images!

I friend of mine just had newborn pictures taken and she said the photographer blew warm air on the area where the pics were taken and that kept the baby asleep.

I have a small portable heater and just order a white machine..........been using a fan for some filtered noise which works well but not as portable :)
