Ok here's my dilema..

Im covering my first wedding in 3weeks time (my mates wedding, im doing it for free) I'm fairly happy with my current gear because i normally do fashion stuff, however I need something wider for the wedding which is going to be in a church.

I've got a budget of about £600 (£700 tops) Do I get both the canon 50mm f2.8 + canon 85mm f1.2 or do I Buy the sigma 70-200mm f2.8..?

Any advise welcome.

cheers

Tom :)

Why not hire?

Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS plus Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS would be around £130 for 7 days from Lenses for Hire, for example.

I've not used the company, and have no connection, but they seem to offer a good deal. http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/

yeah but Rob, they need a deposit which = the cost of the lens/es

Iv actually looked into renting with that company, they dont requrie a deposit as they take a copy of your credit card details.

I may rent but id prefer to buy, just wish i could afford the canon 24-70mm f2.8..lol

The 17-55 f2.8 IS would be more useful on crop format than the 24-70 f2.8 for a wedding in the UK (we've owned both in the past).

Church is dark, the faster the better. f/1.2 and f/1.4 lenses are invaluable for many church weddings.

Where can you get an 85 f1.2 plus a Canon f2.8 for £700?

If you need something wider (or do you mean faster?) I would be looking at a 35L but staying within your budget I would plump for a 85 f1.8 and a 35 f2 or 50mm f1.4 (2 stops faster than the macro).

Your 17-40L is wide enough, but F4 is a little slow. 17-55 F2.8 IS is the best general purpose wedding lens. I don't tend to use fast primes in a church even though I have them, I tend to use the IS lens. 50 F2.8 is neither wide nor fast, and I don't even remember hearing about that lens before.

You can do without a long lens by standing closer, but you can't do without a good fast lens.
